The Wolves are Howling After Loss to the Trojans
September 8, 2021
Friday night’s game was a tough matchup between two state ranked teams: the Chesterton Trojans and the Michigan City Wolves. The No. 10 team in Indiana Class 6A, Chesterton, started their game with a 70 yard pass from quarterback Chris Mullen to wide receiver Bryce Thoma for a Trojan touchdown in the first 20 seconds of the game. Kicker Alex Drewes booted home the extra point to make the score 7-0. After scoring on a 21 yard run of their own, and converting the extra point, the Wolves tied up the game at 7 apiece.
In the second quarter, the Trojans trailed after Michigan City scored in the beginning portion of the quarter, but the defence managed to block their kick. Going into halftime the Trojans were trailed 13-7. Chesterton scored a touchdown in the third quarter with a 10 yard pass from Mullen to his favorite target, senior receiver Jackson Westmoreland. After Westmoreland’s touchdown, the Trojans secured the lead (with another Drewes XP) 14-13, going into the fourth quarter.
The action packed fourth quarter began with Ethan Troy scoring on a 2 yard run, but the Trojans elected to go for two, and failed the conversion attempt. Later in the quarter, with 3:44 left, Michigan City reached paydirt again, this time scoring a 15 yard touchdown, and converting the PAT, tying the score at 20.. With less than a minute left, Chesterton mounted a final drive of their own, capped when Mullen made a 28 yard pass to the back of the endzone, again to his go to target, Westmoreland. Drewes netted his third PAT of the night, bringing the score to 27-20, Chesterton. The Wolves only had around 40 seconds to make a comeback, which the Trojan defense halted.
On the night, Mullen led the way offensively with 252 passing yards, while Troy paced the ground attack with 23 rushing yards. Thoma led all Trojan receivers with 137 receiving yards, but it was Westmoreland who scored two touchdowns. Defensively, for Chesterton, Matthew McCracken had 11 tackles and a fumble recovery, while Westmoreland and junior linebacker Keegan Wrigley each finished with an interception. Your 3-0 Trojans return home for action this Friday, in the annual Homecoming game, where they will take on the LaPorte Slicers beginning at 7pm.
