90s sitcom Seinfeld is now available for streaming on Netflix – all 180 episodes are accessible to watch from October 1st.

The TV series Seinfeld stars Jerry Seinfeld, a comedian, as himself, as well as his friends George Costanza (Jason Alexander), Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), and neighbor, Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards). Commonly known as “a show about nothing,” Seinfeld details the daily lives and struggles of four friends who live in New York City. Episodes begin and conclude with Jerry Seinfeld performing comedy in front of an audience. Produced by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, Seinfeld ran for nine seasons on NBC, beginning in 1989 and continuing until 1998.

Seinfeld revolutionized sitcoms and television by refraining from a “multi-camera” effect which presented the show in a more theatrical way. The multi-camera effect is a term used to describe a sitcom that is filmed as if it were a play, instead of a television show. This effect typically uses four camera angles. One classic example of this effect being displayed is on the sitcom Cheers. Additionally, Seinfeld altered the course of the sitcom through the characters. The main characters- Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer do not change or develop. The characters act selfishly and deceitfully. Seinfeld grew in popularity because it offered viewers a comical twist on everyday life.

It is reported that Netflix paid roughly $500 million for the rights to Seinfeld in 2019 during a costly deal with Sony Pictures Television, the distributor of the series, which lasted five years.. Up until recently, Seinfeld was available on Hulu. Seinfeld will be available for streaming on Netflix for the next five years and will also be available to watch on other networks such as Paramount Network and Comedy Central.
