The CHS girls tennis team has been working hard to perfect their skills for the upcoming season this spring. With the team’s top two players having graduated, the girls have been fighting hard for the two varsity singles spots. Currently, Coach Tom Bour has sophomore Aleksa Sorgic playing varsity 1 singles and junior Ava Komp with 2 singles. Senior Gretta Burke has been playing 3 singles for a third year.

“It feels awesome to move up so much. My brother and I worked so hard in the off season to get to that position, so it’s so rewarding to get this opportunity” said Sorgic.

In varsity doubles, senior Aubrey Isakson leads again in number 1 doubles for a third and final year. Many were worried upon starting the season, as Isakson was recovering from tendonitis in her ankle. Fortunately, she is back on the court and is joined by her new partner, freshman MacKenzie Kania.

“After wearing a boot for a while, working with the trainers, and doing footwork exercises, it was a fairly simple recovery,” explained Isakson. “I’m just so excited to be back. I feel like I have a fresh set of eyes on the game now too.”

“It’s been really fun to play 1 doubles. It’s definitely different from singles in terms of strategies and working with others, but I really enjoy it,” added Kania.

While Isakson and Kania plan to dominate in 1 doubles, seniors Ella Girzadas and Theresa Connors plan to follow suit in 2 doubles.

“It feels really good to be able to play 2 doubles. The past two years, I’ve worked so hard and practiced five days a week throughout the off season and season, so I’m definitely very proud and happy to have accomplished this” said Girzadas.

“It’s been so fun playing 2 doubles, and I’m looking forward to seeing where the season goes,” added Connors.

Although the girls are practicing as much as possible, they still make sure to include many opportunities for team bonding. Captains Ella Girzadas, Sophie Hamilton, and Aubrey Isakson have put a major emphasis on boosting team morale through bonding activities.

“We’re definitely super close as a team this year. We just had a pasta party, and there was a tennis ball pinata that we all violently swung at,” laughed Isakson.

“I always love team pasta parties. At our last one, we went on a scavenger hunt and it was so much fun,” added Burke.

“We also just started a tradition of Big and Littles, where each upperclassman takes an underclassman under their wing for the season” explained Sorgic. “My big is Sophie this season, and it’s been so fun!”

The CHS Girls Tennis team is bound for an excellent season with their constant grit and persistent mindsets. Their next home match and senior night will be on May 9th against Lake Central at 4:30 PM. Make sure to come out and support this awesome team!
