Get ready because Labor Day is coming up. Schools often celebrate Labor Day by having the day off on the first Monday in September. As such, Chesterton will be off on Monday September 4.
What is Labor Day, and why do we celebrate it? Labor Day is the celebration of the determination and accomplishments of workers who made better work conditions for people. Before Labor Day’s implementation, employees, which included children, worked at least twelve hours, six days a week, while also having difficulty breathing due to the toxins in the air.
When was the first Labor Day? Oddly, the first Labor Day was on a Tuesday. On September 5, 1882, the very first Labor Day celebration took place in New York City. Furthermore, when more and more states adopted Labor Day, President Grover Cleveland had a law passed stating that the first Monday of September was going to be a national holiday.
In addition to celebrating Labor Day, many people have parties and parades. And in the parades there are oftentimes workers to show the relevance and importance of Labor day.
Have a great Labor Day CHS!
