For the past couple of years, student drivers were recommended to get a school parking permit if they were taking their personal transportation to and from school. Unfortunately, the passes were often forgotten about and most students drove regardless if they were utilizing a pass or not. This year, students are required to get a parking permit if they are driving to school.
The use of parking passes will help create a safer environment for the students and staff of CHS. When parking passes are required, student drivers will easily be identified in the event of a situation. If there is an issue with a student’s vehicle or even if an accident occurs in the parking lot, students will be identified significantly easier. This process will allow for a quicker investigation and help eliminate chaos and confusion. Enforcing the passes will provide more safety to student drivers.
“We want students to be safe, that is the goal for the use of these passes,” explains CHS assistant principal, Mr. Robert Blumenthal.
Student Resource Officers work to make our school a safe and comfortable environment. It is not possible for SROs to check every car in the parking lot each school day, but periodically, parked vehicles will be looked at to ensure that students are parked in designated areas. With the help of parking passes, SROs will be able to confirm the owners of the vehicles in the school parking lot.
“We can keep track of who’s here and who shouldn’t be here,” CHS Student Resource Officer, Sargent Christopher Swickard said, “We don’t want just random people parking in our spots.”
It is highly suggested that students purchase their parking passes as soon as they can. Once new drivers begin to take themselves to school, they should also get a parking pass. The parking passes will enter students into a random drug testing pool much like those who participate in extracurricular activities. If student drivers don’t have a pass, they can be fined a minimum of $5. In the main office, students can buy the passes for $3 and collect the necessary paperwork to receive a pass.
