Should golf be played as a professional sport? Or even considered as a sport in the first place? This has been talked about for many years and everyone seems to have differing responses and opinions on the topic.
Personally, I do not think so. I think golf should be played for recreational purposes only, and even that is a stretch. I don’t believe that golf requires enough physical exertion to be considered a sport or for golfers to be considered athletes. All golfers do is ride a cart down to their next hole and get out to swing the club, and then the cycle repeats. Golfers even have people, called caddies, who carry their equipment for them. How much more lazy could they get? Golf is a game and not a sport.
Yes, one could argue that all sports are games. But what they fail to realize is that the main aspect of a sport is physical activity, and a game is an activity played with rules for entertainment purposes. Sports fall into both of these categories, and golf only falls under one. Therefore, golf is a game. Some may also argue that golf requires physical exertion, but for whom? The only people who would get tired from swinging a golf club would be the old men who play it.
“I think it’s extremely boring, and I don’t even know why people consider it a sport… how do you even win?” said senior Kristen Cartergine.
People who think golf is a sport are the same people who think bowling is a sport. Spoiler alert, it’s not, but that’s a discussion for another day. You’re allowed to have your own thoughts about whether or not golf should be considered a sport or a game, but this is my hot take on the debate.
