The VMAs are definitely one of the most anticipated award shows of the year, especially with the diverse new albums released this past year. Artists like Dove Cameron and Ice Spice not only put their mark on the industry but also created a new world of music audiences have been waiting for. Let’s take a look at what happened at the 23’ VMAs!
To kick off the show, Nicki Minaj hosted while the award show was held at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. While Minaj hosted the main show, Saweetie hosted the 90-minute pre-show with their other co-hosts Nessa Dometi Pongo and Kevan Kenney. Kenney presented “Push Performance of The Year” while Saweetie and Pongo presented “Video for Good”.
A very popular early 00’ band called NSYNC reunited at this year’s VMAs and many fans were overwhelmed with joy. After the band split quite some time ago it was safe to say this was a reunion we had craved. The famous boy band presented the award for “Best Pop” to none other than Taylor Swift. Swift not only won “Best Pop” but also won eight more VMAs in one night coming in second place to Beyoncé. Some of the categories she won were “Artist Of The Year”, “Album Of The Year”, “Best Direction”, and many more. While many suspected that Swift would be announcing the highly anticipated album, Reputation Taylor’s Version, fans were equally disappointed to not receive the exciting news, especially since last year Swift announced her newest album, Midnights. Swift wore a gorgeous black ensemble which included gold jewelry as well as additions of gold snakes referencing the album. Even though Swift did not outwardly say the rumors were true, she did not deny them either, so many are speculating that this is a huge hint that the re-release of Reputation will soon be hitting the market.
As mentioned previously, many new artists were acknowledged this year including the wins of Ice Spice and Dove Cameron. Ice Spice was up for four nominations and ended up winning the award “Best New Artist” which is a huge accomplishment for this being her breakthrough year in the music industry. Cameron ended up winning “Video for Good” for her song “Breakfast”. Both of these artists have been very open about their support as well as identifying with the LGBTQ+ community. Audiences agree that this was a great win for the two artists considering that the queer community needs more representation in every aspect of entertainment, especially music. Fans are very grateful that artists like them bring such great representation for them with their music and will continue to do so throughout their careers.
Obviously, you can’t have the VMAs without having an amazing performance performed by a beloved artist and this year was no different. Singer, songwriter, Demi Lovato, performed new editions of her iconic songs, “Cool for the Summer”, “Heart Attack”, and “Sorry Not Sorry”. Her performance was outstanding with great visual effects and amazing vocals that were amplified with amazing electric guitar solos and percussion instruments. It is also reported that these new songs will be on her new album Revamped, which has been out as of September 15th.
This year marks an incredible win for many artists and, I say this every year, definitely made history with the award picks. Everything from the awards, the show, and the fashion, this year is one to remember, and with new music entering the market, audiences are sure that next year’s MTV Video Music Awards will be just as phenomenal.
