On September 12, The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards took place in New Jersey. There were many highs of the night with big wins from Taylor Swift, Ice Spice, and Shakira, as well as show-stopping performances from Olivia Rodrigo, Demi Lovato, and many more. However, one of the lows of the night was the fashion. Overall, I wasn’t impressed with any of the looks. Though some were better than others, I would’ve liked to see some more risks and interesting pieces. With that being said, here is my best and worst dressed at the 2023 MTV VMA’s!
Best Dressed List!
1. Olivia Rodrigo
My top pick for best dressed at this year’s VMAs is Olivia Rodrigo. Shimmering from top to bottom, Rodrigo rocked a custom silver dress from Ludovic de Saint Sernin. Though simple, this was the best look of the night. The sequin made it interesting enough without being too flashy. Rodrigo proves that less is more!
2. Madelyn Cline
“Outer Banks” actress, Madelyn Cline, was the second best look of the night, wearing a custom nude Givenchy dress. I loved the uniqueness of the dress whilst still maintaining an elegant style. Cline could arguably rival Rodrigo for the best look of the night!
3. Megan Thee Stallion
Fourth on the list is Megan Thee Stallion. The “Girls The Hood” rapper was dressed in a mesh Brandon Blackwood gown. It was risqué and sophisticated at the same time. She topped it off with a large rhinestone choker that ties everything together.
4. Taylor Swift
Next on the list is the one and only, Taylor Swift. Swift attended the VMAs in a custom black Versace dress with gold hardware attached.
Donatella Versace tweeted to Swift, “@taylorswift, I couldn’t have been prouder to design this dress for your gorgeous entrance to the VMAs tonight”.
While I do agree Swift looked gorgeous, from her hair styling and its accompanying accessories, I would’ve liked to see something less simple. The dress was bulky and plain at some points and she should’ve taken more of a risk. Yet, Swift’s look was overshadowed by her record breaking nine wins!
5. Selena Gomez
Capping off the top five is Selena Gomez. Wearing a red Oscar de la Renta dress with vines all over, Gomez looked stunning. I’m not in love with the dress as I think that the vines are too much. I would’ve preferred to see some more dennison from her. However, Gomez shined nonetheless!
Worst Dressed List!
1. Doja Cat
Doja Cat tops my list of worst dressed at this year’s VMAs in a Monse web gown. Doja Cat is entering a new album cycle and wanted to match her look to the era. However, she completely missed the mark in this awkward web dress. This look felt like a cheap copy of Emmy winner Zendaya’s “Spiderman No Way Home” red carpet look. I understand Doja Cat’s intentions, however the execution was poorly done.
2. Emily Ratajkowski
The second worst dressed at the Video Music Awards was Emily Ratajkowski. She wore a green hauler neck dress by Jean Paul Gaultier’s Soleil line. I didn’t like anything about this dress. The top and bottom part of the dress look like two different items thrown together from a random closet. I may not see the vision, but it was not appealing to look at. However, Ratajkowski still looked stunning in her hair and makeup.
3. Renee Rapp
“Snow Angel” singer, Renee Rapp, is third on my list. She wore a TK and TK black dress that was bulky and odd looking. The top part was much larger than the bottom which showed odd proportions for the overall look. This look had everything I didn’t like about Swift’s look but on a different level.
4. Cardi B
Cardi B wore a Dilara Findikoglu dress made from silver hair clips. While I can appreciate the artistry and risk taken, I don’t think that this was the best look that the rapper could’ve chosen. The dress looked spiked and odd. I think that this look would’ve been better suited for a fashion show or art exhibit, rather than a red carpet. Looking at this I wonder, how did it feel to sit down?!
5. Saweetie
Last on my worst dressed list is Saweetie. She wore a pink sequined dress with bones attached to it. As with Cardi B, I appreciated the risk and drive to be unique, however, less is more sometimes. The pink dress itself was fine, except the bones made it seem tacky and didn’t add much for me.
