The Chesterton girls’ volleyball team has had an interesting season, to say the least. After starting 4-4 in their first 8 games it looked like they were going to have a ‘Just O.K.’ season. Just a month later, and that could not be further from the truth. The Trojans are now 16-9 and are looking like they can go far into the postseason tournament.
After their rough start to the season, the girls realized that if they put in the work and played as a team, they could be great.
“We started working together as a team,” said senior captain Kylie Campbell, “We have an extremely talented roster but we realized we had to put in work in order to win.”
Chesterton’s season has had its fair share of highlights. The girls went on a nine-game win streak that was capped off with a win over Laporte who is currently ranked 14 in the entire state of Indiana.
Laporte had beaten Chesterton earlier this year 3-0 and only had one loss going into their second game against the Trojans. The girls didn’t let this get to them, however, and after 5 hard-fought sets, Chesterton won 3-2. After a win over a team of that caliber, to say that the team was happy would be an understatement.
“Beating Laporte was honestly one of the best moments I’ve had while playing volleyball,” said Campbell, “It was so exhilarating to beat a team that has been so dominant this season.”
Chesterton still has just less than a month left in their regular season and with a season this good, they have hopes of extending their success into the postseason.
“Our goal this year is to win sectionals. We have tough matchups but we could win,” said Campbell.
The girls lost to rival Valparaiso last night, but the morale is high for their game Monday against the Brickies from Hobart.
