The Chesterton Trojans fought hard against the Merrillville Pirates this past Friday in their final regular-season game. The Trojans have concluded their regular season, and to say the season was difficult would be an understatement.
This year, the Trojans reigned victorious against the LaPorte Slicers and the Portage Indians. For Chesterton’s Homecoming game, the Trojans beat LaPorte 28-7, with an outstanding performance from senior running back Garrett Lewis and senior receiver Alex Santucci. At an away game against the Portage Indians, the Trojans kept their fans on their feet with a score too close for comfort. The Trojans finally brought home their second victory after a 50-yard touchdown led the Trojans to end the game 35-31.
Unfortunately, the Chesterton Trojans fell short against all other opponents this season. The opening game of the season was played against Hobart and ended with a close score of 16-13. Senior quarterback Sebastian Boswell had 109 passing yards, junior quarterback Brady McCormack had 121 rushing yards, and they each had a touchdown during the game. In another close game against Warsaw, the Trojans lost 8-6. In this game, Boswell’s 16-yard pass to Santucci led to a touchdown for the Trojans. Chesterton experienced a tough loss against Michigan City this year with a final score of 28-6. Boswell suffered an injury that would put him out for the rest of the season which left McCormack in charge of the field.
“I love Boswell… I know how it feels when someone goes down with an injury, but if I had to step in it’s alright, and I feel like I’ve done a pretty good job and I’ll continue to do that,” says McCormack on stepping in for Boswell.
In the always high-tension game against Valparaiso, Chesterton fell 28-14. McCormack was the starting quarterback against the Vikings until an injury took him out for the rest of the game. It was then that JV Starting quarterback CJ Perez stepped right up into position to fill McCormack’s shoes. Perez threw a 41-yard pass to sophomore receiver Louis Raffin and delivered a Trojan Touchdown. In the next game against Lake Central, the Trojans lost 20-14. The touchdowns of the night were made by Lewis and senior receiver Cameron Chadwick. The Trojans took on Crown Point the following week, ending with a score of 21-7. The 16-yard touchdown by Chadwick was the only excitement for Trojan fans that night. For their final regular-season game, the Trojans traveled to Merrillville. Lewis delivered a 23-yard rushing touchdown, and the team came home ending their last game with a final score of 7-35.
“I feel like at the beginning of the season we didn’t really peak at all… I feel like that’s what’s really going to help us in Sectionals, we’re going to peak there,” explains senior defensive back Hayden DeMarco.
The Trojans will face the Valparaiso Vikings in less than two weeks for their first postseason game. The sectional game will occur on October 27th and will take place at the CHS football field. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. so come out and support the team for the big game!
