In a long-awaited and much-anticipated development, the South Shore Line will resume train services between Gary and Dunes Park on October 25, 2023, marking the successful completion of the “Project Double Track.” Commuters and residents in the region are rejoicing as this milestone promises improved transportation options and a boost to the local economy.
The South Shore Line, which provides vital transportation links between Northwest Indiana and downtown Chicago, had temporarily suspended its services on the Gary to Dunes Park route to facilitate the double-tracking project. The ambitious project aimed to increase the capacity, reliability, and efficiency of the South Shore Line, which serves a growing population and facilitates connectivity for many who rely on the trains for their daily commutes.
The double-tracking project involved laying an additional set of tracks along this section of the railway, allowing for simultaneous travel in both directions. This improvement will significantly reduce travel times, enhance the reliability of the South Shore Line, and provide a better experience for commuters.
Thrilled to announce that the Double Track Northwest Indiana project has reached this goal in the FTA’s Capital Investment Grant program, said Michael Noland, President and CEO of NICTD.
The resumption of service is also expected to have a positive impact on the local economy. Businesses and communities along the route are optimistic about increased foot traffic and new opportunities for growth.
The Project Double Track has not only upgraded the infrastructure but has also incorporated several safety enhancements, including updated signaling systems and grade crossing improvements. Passengers can now expect a smoother and more secure journey along this route.
The South Shore Line’s renewed service between Gary and Dunes Park is poised to be a game-changer for the region, benefiting both daily commuters and local businesses. It demonstrates a commitment to infrastructure development that will pave the way for a brighter future in transportation for Northwest Indiana.
