Whether it be a holiday or a specific atmosphere, every month has its own unique charm. December has festivity, October has autumn, and July has… heat, a whole lot of heat. Besides that, everyone has different opinions on the enjoyability of the months. Some people find a month like June to be the perfect temperature and atmosphere, while others may find June to be a period of discomfort and dread its arrival.
That is where this ranking comes into play. As we reach the end of the 2023 year, having fully experienced 10 out of 12 months, it’s time the months are pitted against each other. After hours upon hours of research, and based on the author’s personal experiences, the months have found their place on the podium.
January – 12th place
This may anger many, but January takes last place. While yes, it marks the start of the new year, it’s bittersweet as it’s another year away from great memories and/or events. Along with that, January becomes more depressing when compared to the joy experienced in December, with its festivity and snow not being seen as a nuisance, yet. With all things considered, it’s obvious that January is the most depressing month on the calendar.
August – 11th place
Everything about this month is mediocre. There isn’t even much to highlight in this month, only that school starts up again, which is bittersweet depending on students’ grades and social status. Also, August should not be categorized as a fall month. It’s common knowledge that autumn lasts from late September to the middle of November. This mundane month takes 1st place for being uneventful and rather dull compared to the rest of the months.
February – 10th place
This month doesn’t take last place only because it gets a few pity points. First of all, whoever made the Gregorian calendar wronged February, and it hurts to see. They cut February short by 3 days, only giving it another day every four years, known as “leap day”. Another addition to February is Valentine’s Day. It can be a day to spend time with the special person in your life, or just people you care about, which can help create long-lasting memories and bonds. Besides the pity points, February has its flaws as well. Based on personal experience, February is the lowest point of the year, as the weather is frigid and people can still see dirty piles of snow around five feet tall next to sidewalks. Along with Valentine’s Day, there’s Groundhog Day, which is just a topic to make small talk about at the dinner table. This is why February sits at 10th place.
July – 9th place
Now it’s time for the single digits, which have real redeeming qualities. July, of course, is in summer, which has its upsides and downsides. On one side, students are mostly free from schooling, but some people may have schooling depending on age and future occupation. On the downside, July is extremely hot. Sweltering, even. Being outside in that weather for more than an hour is dreadful. Of course, some people enjoy the heat, and it’s important to respect their opinion, even if it seems outrageous. Speaking of summer, somewhere around mid-July, the initial fun from summer fades and now you’re just longing for cool weather as the days blend together. Also, some may use the 4th of July to combat this ranking, but when all your neighbors are blowing up fireworks at 11 PM when you’re trying to sleep, even two entire weeks after the holiday. For this, July takes the 9th spot.
March – 8th place
This month is, with all due respect, mediocre at best. The only thing that doesn’t make this a “bad” month is St. Patrick’s Day, which results in the seasonal release of shamrock shakes. This shake is dang near delectable, it’s smooth and nectarous and the minty flavor completes it, making a beverage fit for the gods. Besides that, March is mediocre. It’s rainy and “spring weather” hasn’t set in yet, as it’s cold and dreary. Not to mention all the snow has now transformed into slush, the uglier and more slippery form of snow. While walking in slush, you should be repulsed by how dirty it is. March is set at 8th place, where it rightfully should be.
April– 7th place
This is where things start looking brighter for the months ahead. April is an enjoyable month to say the least. It starts out with April Fools Day, which can either be a horrible or hilarious experience. Another attribute you could either love or hate about the month is the rain. While the spring weather is a wonderful change of pace from winter, it usually comes with a large amount of rain. Many people enjoy the rain, for either aesthetic or beneficial reasons. The month is a tad boring, but good enough to take the 7th spot.
September– 6th place
.
Ranking September was confusing. September doesn’t seem to have much going for it. However, there’s something charismatic about the month, to the point it has its own theme song, September by Earth, Wind & Fire! I will admit that September feels sort of like a month to bring up the excitement around autumn. This includes short periods of chilly weather and seasonal foods, like apple cider and pumpkin spice items. It’s a nice month, so with all things considered, this month takes 6th place.
June – 5th place
It would be unfair to not put June in the top half of the month. June, after all, is the true start of summer joy. You’re free from the burden of schoolwork, which can be especially helpful if you are currently working. While the weather is hot, the sweltering heat doesn’t become annoying until July! It’s rather difficult to explain what makes June as great as it is, but it’s great enough to be granted the 5th spot.
November – 4th place
.
This one ranking is completely biased. November is in between the 2 best months, October and December, which makes it somewhat equivalent in enjoyability. Winter weather starts in November, and that feeling of seeing snow on the ground for the first time is magical to most. Not to mention the feeling of Christmas starts, Specifically at the very start of the month, which is pure fact and it is my God-given right to have a Christmas tree up within the first week of November. There’s Thanksgiving as well, and even if the story behind it may be completely false, it’s still a time to spend time with loved ones and enjoy a flavorsome feast. All in all, November deserves the 4th place spot.
May – 3rd place
We all have to admit, when it comes to one of the most fun months on the calendar, it’s clear the answer is May. When May hits, you have the realization of school going out the very next month, and schoolwork also slows during this period. For people in certain grades and classes, class trips are imminent, which provides memories and strengthens bonds with friends. The month in its entirety is simply exhilarating; you begin having more fun, and not to mention with summer approaching, the bright atmosphere adds to the enjoyment of May. With that being said, May is 3rd on the podium.
December – 2nd place
The fact that this doesn’t take the top of the podium may come as a shock to most. After all, December is a jovial holiday and is the last month of the year! That’s why this decision was the hardest to make. Both October and December have an indescribable amount of joy and positivity flowing throughout them, but based on personal experience and bias, December is an extremely close second. December has a wholesome atmosphere with a festive motif spread throughout multiple countries. Another thing about this month is that snow hasn’t gotten old to you yet, as you can just say to yourself, “The snow? It’s so pretty, I love winter! Surely this won’t become a nuisance in a month or two!” December holidays can also hold religious/ethnic significance, including Christmas for Christianity, Hanukkah for Judaism, Kwanzaa for those of African American descent, and Hajj for Islam. Finally, these times were an elite childhood memory we will all cherish. Whether you were grabbing presents from under a tree, or spending time with family and friends, these experiences were the most exciting part of the year besides your birthday and Halloween. Now, it’s a time to spend time with loved ones, which is always something to look forward to! This month is something marvelous, and that’s why it goes in its rightful place at number two.
October – 1st place
This is the cream of the crop of the month. Where do we begin? October is extremely pretty. If you ignore the fact that leaves changing color means they’re slowly dying, the view of multiple-colored leaves is majestic and it’s hard to not stare in awe. This whole month’s aura and atmosphere are a perfect mix of spooky and wholesome. For some reason, in a month that has a holiday about creepy ghouls and monsters, it’s rather calming and peaceful. Halloween is not only a nice pastime, remembering memories of trick or treating around the neighborhood in different costumes, but also a time to maybe invite a couple of friends over, and have some pumpkin pie and apple cider while watching classic horror movies. There are also other fun activities, including pumpkin carving, corn mazes, costume hunting, and so much more! Overall, October takes the top spot and cements itself as the pinnacle of the year.
Everyone’s opinions are different. It all depends on past experiences and personal bias. At the end of the day, it’s important to respect everyone’s opinion, even if you disagree. Yet, the most important thing you should take from this article is that we need justice for February.
