The day after Thanksgiving is usually filled with shopping, eating, sleeping, or just spending more time with family for most. For the CHS wrestling team, it meant waking up bright and early, hopping on a bus to Goshen, and competing against 9 other schools at the RedHawk Super Duals. The meet consists of 9 different dual meets for each school all happening at once. If you think that sounds chaotic, well you’d be absolutely right.
Despite this chaos, the Trojans did their thing on the mats. They finished 7-2 on the day, only losing to Bellmont and South Bend Riley. Their biggest wins were over Lakeland and Hammond, each with a score of 72-12. Even Chesterton’s losses weren’t too bad, losing 57-24 to Bellmont and 41-28 to SB Riley.
Now, if you’ve followed Chesterton wrestling, Hayden Demarco’s name has lit up the headlines. He made it to the state finals in his freshman and sophomore years but unfortunately missed his junior year. Despite this, Demarco won all of his matches finishing the day 9-0. Not only did he win all 9, but he won by fall in 8 of them; the most impressive of these falls being against Hammond’s Darryl Wharton where Demarco pinned Wharton in just 38 seconds.
Demarco wasn’t the only Trojan who dominated on the mat. Freshman Max Quiroz also went undefeated, pinning 5 of his opponents. Quiroz was a star in middle school, and he seems to be living up to the hype.
Overall, the Trojans started the season hot, and after their performance on Friday, the morale for the season must be high. Chesterton travels to Portage today to take on the Indians in their first DAC bout. If you see members of the team around, wish them luck. Go Trojans!
