The Emmys are the biggest award shows for television and this year’s award ceremony definitely stood out. While the awards themselves were very constant and did not show a lot of variety, there were numerous television series that stood out solely from their immense popularity. On the other hand, the Creative Arts Emmys had way more variety in their award show compared to the ceremony last Monday. The 2024 Emmys were a hit and had numerous well-deserved awards to some cinematic masterpieces.
Starting off strong with the most well-known wins of the night, Succession and The Bear. Both shows have had incredible success and it especially showed on Monday night. Succession won a grand total of six awards including: “Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series” (Matthew Macfayden) “Outstanding Writing For a Drama Series” (Jesse Armstrong) “Outstanding Directing For a Drama Series” (Mark Mylod) “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series” (Kieran Culkin) “Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series” (Sarah Snook) and finally “Outstanding Drama Series”. It was no surprise that Succession took home a lot of awards that night, due to the number of awards they took home at the Globes. It was an expected victory for the television show, but a very much deserved win for the cast and crew.
Along with Succession, The Bear tied with an equal number of six wins. Their wins include: “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series” (Ayo Edibiri) “Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series” (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series” (Jeremy Allan White) “Outstanding Directing For a Comedy Series” (Christopher Storer) and finally “Outstanding Comedy Series”. Similarly, The Bear took home a good number of wins at the Globes, so the success for the show was very much expected. The Bear was phenomenal and heavily deserved the six wins.
While Succession and The Bear were the show stoppers, Beef also had quite a lot of success with a total of five wins. These wins include: “Outstanding Directing For a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie” (Lee Sung Jin) “Outstanding Writing For a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie” (Lee Sung Jin) “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie” (Steven Yuen) “Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie” (Ali Wong) and finally “Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series”. Beef definitely got the appreciation and hype it well deserved.
The LGBTQ+ community was shown love on Monday night as well! The iconic television show, RuPaul’s Drag Race, won “Outstanding Reality Competition Program” and audiences could not be more thrilled. In RuPaul’s acceptance speech, the Emmy award winner wanted to thank all viewers of the show for loving all of the drag queens shown on screen and even recognized the backlash of drag queen library readings.
“If a drag queen wants to read you a story at a library, listen to her because knowledge is power,” RuPaul explained in his acceptance speech.
Another great achievement for the queer community was GLAAD winning the award “Television Academy’s Governors Award.” This award is gifted to an individual or group that has made an incredible contribution to the arts. GLAAD is an LGBTQ media advocacy organization that has worked incredibly hard to provide diverse, accurate, and a variety of queer content. President and CEO of GLAAD, Sarah Kate Ellis, accepted the Emmy on behalf of the organization.
Some other notable awards such as “Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series” was awarded to actress Quinta Brunson for her work in Abbott Elementary. Another notable award “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series” was awarded to Jennifer Coolidge for her work in The White Lotus. Both of these actresses were recognized for their acting achievements and both awards were great wins for the both of them.
This year’s Emmy Award ceremony had a ton of memorable moments. From cinematic television shows getting the recognition they deserve, to the queer community getting more and more recognition in Hollywood. Overall, the Emmys were pretty consistent with their award winners but still had some great standout moments.
