All juniors interested in starting a career after high school should consider joining the 2024-2025 Student Internship Program. The program gives students a chance to get a head start on their careers during their senior year, giving them an advantage over other applicants and preparing them for whatever field they plan on entering. Students will gain real-life experience, helping them decide what they want to do before they graduate high school.
The program includes two different options, internships and work-study. Both options are worth from one to three credits, or a semester class. If students choose to take an internship they will be given career exploration and more time to decide what specific internship they want. Students signing up for an internship are expected to be on track to graduate and to be in attendance at the beginning of both semesters. To be considered valid, the same number of hours must be put into the internship as would an actual classroom. Some of the assigned work that must be done while taking an internship are self-evaluation, supervisor evaluation, self-reflection, and a final exam.
If internships don’t feel like the right choice, students can choose to take work-study instead. They will be required to secure a job by the 1st day of school, August 14, 2024. This might be a better fit for anyone who has a set career in mind, or that already has a job. However, if students do not secure a job by the time limit, they will be placed in a regular CHS class in place of their work-study block. Students will be required to work a total of 90 hours per credit to pass. Work studies also include a self-evaluation, supervisor evaluation, self-reflection, and a final exam during it. The options depend on what a student feels fit for their situation, and they must choose which they want to take based on their own needs and goals.
“Internships really help you be able to see and envision your future before you even get there.” CHS internship coordinator Mark Peterson says. Any questions about internships should be directed to his email [email protected].
All school counselors are handing out Internship selection guides and application sheets in their offices now, students are expected to look through the internship lists and schedule a meeting as soon as possible, as it is on a first come first serve basis. Most placements will be made in the spring before the school year ends. Any juniors interested in working should jump on the opportunity to get a senior-year internship and get their career started early.
