The Chesterton girls basketball team ended a great season on January 31 with a heartbreaking loss to Valparaiso in the Sectional Tournament. Despite the loss, the girls fought as hard as they could, bringing the game within 3 after being down 17 in the fourth. The rivalry game ended 55-49 in favor of Valpo, ending the Trojans spectacular season
Chesterton ended the regular season 16-7 overall and 4-3 in the DAC. They had some dominant wins throughout, beating Michigan City 66-29, Westville 64-24, and Laporte 64-20. Not only did they run up the score on weaker competition, but they also had some notable wins over tough conference mates. The Trojans beat Merrillville 65-63 and split with Crown Point on the season, winning their first matchup 52-47.
Chesterton was led by the sophomore duo Tenley Davis and Kenedi Bradley, who averaged 15.7 and 14.8 PPG respectively. Davis also led the team in rebounds with 9 RPG as well as .7 blocks. Bradley made her mark as a dominant defender as well as a facilitator averaging 3.9 steals and assists per game. Senior Ciara Bonner was a crucial 3 and D player, shooting 33% from beyond the arc as well as averaging 2 steals every game. Sophomore Liv Roach ended the season shooting a staggering 47% from the field. Davis also earned IBCA Player of the Week, after dropping 37 points, 7 boards, and 5 steals against Highland.
Despite losing seniors Ciara Bonner and Delaney King, the Trojans still have a young core and should be an exciting team to watch next season. It will also be interesting to see if their style of play will shift at all now that Head Coach Jack Campbell announced his resignation. More on Campbell’s resignation to come next week.
