Recently, the Chesterton High School Quiz Bowl earned a spot to compete at State Finals! The tournament will be held on March 2nd at Purdue University. At these competitions, 18 teams from all around the area come to compete by answering a series of questions over a myriad of educational topics. The stakes are high as members have but a few seconds to process questions and recall answers and information. It clearly takes a lot of dedication and skill to play in such a competition.
During these competitions, in order to qualify for the tournament, the team competed in the area tournaments, with many areas around the state. During these tournaments, the CHS team scored enough to have the third-highest average score. However, how common is it to qualify for finals against several different teams in Indiana?
“Well, I’ve only been the Quiz Bowl coach for three years, so I don’t know how often our team qualified for state in the past,” answered DeRuntz, “But I think it was pretty normal because we’ve been pretty good. We’ve qualified for state each of the three years that I’ve done Quiz Bowl.”
The team has high hopes for success since members are proficient in quite a few different areas of expertise in subjects like math, literature, sports, music, and many more. Training for Quiz Bowl starts around November before the season starts. DeRuntz added that Quiz Bowl is mostly for fun, and brings intelligent minds together. If anyone is interested in joining the team, there will be an announcement next October encouraging people to sign up and be a part of the team.
