We’ll be counting down the top 7 romance movies that I believe are some of the best romance films ever made. Warning: Spoilers ahead! 7.) 10 Things I hate about you
This movie is a rom com set in a high school where new student, Cameron James, falls for a popular student known as Bianca Stratford, however Bianca’s dad is very strict and won’t let her date until her older sister Kat does. Cameron decides to come up with a plan to get a student, Patrick Verona, to date Kat so that he can date Bianica. Patrick decides to take on the challenge and attempts to get Kat to fall in love with him. During the prom Kat finds out about the challenge, Kat is hurt, and in the iconic scene she shows her feelings to Patrick by writing a poem that she called “10 Things I Hate About You”. She begins to list the reasons why she hates Patrick, and her poem ends with the line “But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you, not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.” This is my favorite scene in the whole movie, as it sparks many emotions, it’s poetic and heartbroken, but it also reveals just how much Kat loves Patrick. This movie is a mix of high-school romance, growth, and comedy. This movie contains an amazing soundtrack, and the script overall has the perfect balance of comedy and romance mixed together. The characters have really good development and are complex.
6.) How to lose a guy in 10 days
This movie is a rom com about a journalist named Andie Anderson, who works for a women’s magazine. She’s aspiring to write more articles and gets the chance to do so with an article named “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” It is an article that is about the idea of a woman dating a guy and using all of the mistakes women make in a relationship to see if it will drive the guy away. In the movie, Benjamin Barry, who is an ad executive, makes a bet that he can make a woman fall in love with him in 10 days. If he succeeds, then he will be able to lead a big diamond campaign. This movie goes on into a comedic tone, and it is humorous, very romantic, and lighthearted. The idea of this plot is very unique, and it is a very clever concept. The chemistry between the two characters plays a huge role in the success of this movie.
5.) Tangled
This movie is an animated film, which is unlike the other movies listed. However, this Disney animated movie takes a twist on the original fairy tale of Rapunzel. For her 18th birthday, Rapunzel wants to see the floating lights in the sky but there is one catch. She has been locked in a tower her whole life by her “mother”. A very charming man known as Flynn Rider happens to stumble across her tower. Flynn and Rapunzel make a deal that if Flynn takes her to see the floating lights, she will give him the crown that he wants. As Flynn and Rapunzel go on their journey, they start to open up to each other. This movie is an extremely heartwarming film, and the viewer can really feel the emotion shown. Flynn takes Rapunzel to see the floating lights and the iconic song “I See the Light” plays. The setting of this scene is very romantic, and this iconic movie takes a spot on the romantic movies that captured our hearts. The movie ends with Rapunzel finally finding her real mother, and Flynn freeing her from her prison.
4.) The Proposal
A romantic comedy about a very high in power editor named Margeret Tate. She is a very uptight person, and everyone in the office dislikes her. She learns that she is going to be deported and sent back to her home in Canada due to her visa expiring. As she is desperate to stay where she is, she comes up with a plan to marry her assistant, Andrew Paxton. Andrew ends up agreeing to the task, and the two end up going to Alaska together to visit Andrew’s family and convince them that the marriage is real. This is a very comforting movie, full of comedy, along with sweet moments. The Proposal is a rom-com, and definitely takes the cake as one of the best romantic comedies. The plot of this movie is pretty predictable, and not extremely creative; however, Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds make up for it in this movie with their amazing acting, therefore making this movie on the list.
3.) Dirty Dancing
A classic movie, released in 1987 is a film about a young woman named Baby who wants to be on vacation in the Peace Corps, however her parents make her go to a place named Catskills. She then meets a man named Johnny, who is played by Patrick Swayze, and soon develops feelings for him. This movie is definitely a favorite. Dirty Dancing is a sad, and dramatic film, but also a lighthearted and tender movie. The soundtrack stood out to me the most. Patrick Swayze plays a dance teacher for Baby, and the dances and songs in the movie are very romantic and overall add to the movie and make it what it is.
2.) The Notebook
A romantic drama movie about a boy named Noah and a girl named Allie, who end up falling in love with each other in the 1940s. As their story is happening, it is being told from the perspective of an older man to a woman in a nursing home. This movie reflects on their love story and has a heartwarming feel to it. This movie is a must-watch and has an extremely romantic plot. The part of this movie that really stood out to me was the intense scene of Noah giving a speech to Ally. His speech was “So, it’s not going to be perfect. We’ll have to work at it every day. But I want you. Not for today, or next week, but forever. Every day, you and me. Think about your life twenty years or fifty years from now. Where do you want to be? If it’s with that guy, go. I lost you once. I suppose I can do it again. Just don’t take the easy way out. Answer one question for me. Forget about me and your fiancé and your parents for a minute. Forget about what you should do. What about you? What do you want?” In this speech, he shows his love for her, as he wants what is best for Ally. This movie is a powerful depiction of love, and not knowing what is going to happen next really makes this movie truly one of the best romance movies.
7.) Titanic
This is another classic movie based on the real events of the Titanic; however, this movie adds a twist to the tragic event, with a love story. This movie is about the characters Rose and Jack, played by Kate Winslet and Leonardo Dicaprio. This movie follows the tragic event of the titanic sinking, and even though the ending is tragic, this movie is extremely romantic. Dicaprio and Winslet have chemistry that pulls the viewer into the movie. Rose is a privileged woman trapped in a forced engagement to a man named Cal. Jack Dawson is a lower-class, poor man who is an artist. Rose attempts to jump off the boat to solve her problems, but Jack saves her. This scene is the beginning of their love story. One scene that stands out to me in particular is the iconic scene of Jack holding Rose on the end of the boat, and “My Heart Will Go On” plays. This scene is one of the most poetic and romantic scenes I have ever seen in a romance film before. James Cameron, the director of the Titanic shot this scene in only one take and used the sunset to set the tone. This scene contains raw emotion, and the intense feeling of love makes this movie incredible. Jack and Rose experienced a lot over the course of the three days they were on this ship. Jack takes Rose to a low-class party and she gets to be free for the first time in her life. Rose sees Jack’s artwork of French girls, and she asks him to paint her wearing the “Heart of The Ocean” necklace that her fiancé gave her. As the iceberg hits the ship, Rose and Jack never give up on each other. Rose saves Jack from drowning, and as Rose was supposed to leave on a boat to escape, she jumped out and ran into Jack’s arms. This movie is a tearjerker for many people. The movie tragically ends with Jack freezing, as he let Rose sit on an object in the ocean that would keep her from freezing, Rose listened to what Jack said and survived. Rose changes her name to Rose Dawson, and experiences everything she had promised Jack that she would do with her life. The movie ends with Rose passing away in her sleep and seeing all of the passengers that had passed on the Titanic, along with Jack at the top of the stairway. This scene in particular brings me to tears, as it is extremely sad, but shows her true love for him.
