This past weekend, the CHS Show Choirs traveled all the way to Richmond, Virginia to take on the Cosby Titan Tournament of Choirs competition. The competition included two separate performance dates. Friday was the competition day for Single Clef groups and Saturday was for Mixed groups. The show choir and their band departed on their long journey to Virginia on Thursday morning in order to begin their competition on Friday evening.
Chesterton’s Unisex group, the Drifters, performed on Friday evening against groups nationwide with groups ranging from California to Pennsylvania. The Drifters put up a great fight against their stiff competition and received First Runner Up in the preliminary round with their Barbie-themed show entitled “Girls!” Sophomore Irene Camacho was named the Drifters Outstanding Performer! The Business, the show choir backup band, tied for first place in the Best Band caption award. This amazing first performance earned them a spot in finals due to being in the top three highest-scoring groups of the day. During finals, the Chesterton Drifters were named Second Runner Up.
“When they first started announcing the Best Performers for each group, I was fully expecting it to be one of the Dance Captains or one of the upperclassmen, but when they called my name I thought to myself ‘Are they wrong?’ I was so excited and I was literally shaking when I got up there” said sophomore Irene Camacho.
The next day, it was time for the Chesterton Sandpipers to showcase their spelling bee-themed show entitled “Sandpiper County Spelling Bee”. The Sandpipers also competed against highly talented groups nationwide. During the preliminary round, the Sandpipers received First Runner Up and earned the Best Band and Best Costumes caption awards. Seniors Alivia Pulsoni and Luke Houseman were named the Best Performers of the performance. Luke Houseman also was named the best male soloist of the night out of all the mixed groups. The Sandpipers earned a spot in finals and performed arguably the best show they have all season. Final awards commenced and the Chesterton Sandpipers were named First Runner Up in finals.
“When my name got called for the Best Performer, I looked around in shock that it was me. It didn’t even register let alone feel real” said senior Alivia Pulsoni. “Getting second place to one of the best, if not the best, groups felt so surreal. We don’t consider ourselves to be one of the top dogs in show choir and to place so high against these amazing groups was so cool”.
Overall, the CHS Show Choirs had a successful trip to Virginia. Next weekend the CHS Show Choirs will travel to Herscher, Illinois to compete in the Herscher Swing & Sing competition for their final competition of the 2023-2024 season. Congratulations to the CHS Show Choirs and The Business and good luck at Herscher!
