With the beginning of Lacrosse season arriving, Chesterton’s star senior lacrosse player, Sylvia Coslov, has a promising season ahead of her. Coslov began her lacrosse career because she grew accustomed to watching her older brother, Reuben, play from a young age. She thought it would be a cool sport to pick up so she began playing her freshman year of high school and has been playing ever since.
Coslov is a midfielder on the field. Her job as a midi is to take draws as well as play offense and defense. She does a lot of running on the field considering her position covers the whole field. Additionally, Coslov has been successful in her lacrosse career so far. Though she has only played for three years, not including her current senior season, she has received many achievements.
“I have gotten Offensive Player of the Year and I was a two-time All Sectional Player. I also have been awarded as a Rising Star Player. I am also on the leadership team council at Chesterton,” said Coslov.
Though she is not sure if she will play in college, she has received the opportunity to coach lacrosse. She plays lacrosse in the summer for Lake Effect and she began playing for them before the start of her junior year.
“Although I was not officially on the team until last summer, I filled in at tournaments when they were short on players. Over the school year, a former teammate, and now current Lake Effect coach, reached out to me and offered me a position as a coach for a new U10 girls team,” said Coslov.
In order to prepare herself for an upcoming season, Coslov does many different things.
“My brother and I pass and do some drills year-round, besides winter, which keeps my stick in my hands during the off-season. I also try and stay active, mostly by running. This year, I prepared the most as we had off-season runs from the winter season up until when practices started,” Coslov added.
Keeping motivation in a game where a player knows the game may not go in their favor could be challenging for any athlete. In order to combat this, Coslov does her best to channel all of her frustrations and anger into playing a good game though it may be a struggle. But despite this inevitable struggle, Coslov loves both the sport of lacrosse as well as the other girls out of the field alongside her. She firmly believes that her team is like having a family. Winning and losing together as a team has brought them closer together, therefore making the seasons even better each year.
“I love lacrosse for a lot of reasons. First, I find the game fun to play. It challenges me physically and it is something I can always improve on. I also like that there is individual growth as well as team growth because it encourages me to get better as a player by myself, but also to uplift my teammates and make them the best they can be,” Coslov commented.
Looking back on past years, Coslov has had some amazing moments in her lacrosse career. Though, one stuck out to her and holds a special place in her heart.
“Definitely winning sectionals my sophomore year. It was my second year playing, so I was not starting, but I definitely feel that I contributed to the team. Being able to make it that far in sectionals, let alone win, was one of the best moments I’ve had while playing lacrosse,” said Coslov while looking back on the most fulfilling moment of her career.
