This past weekend, the CHS Speech Team went to state in Fishers Indiana, while competing at Hamilton Southeastern High School! The team had many successful tournaments throughout the season and it is very sad to see the seniors leave the team. Congratulations to all of the members of the Speech Team for all of their hard work this season!
In order for students to qualify for the state tournament, the team competes at sectionals, and the top six students who qualify in each event then are able to go to the state tournament. The team achieved second place at the sectionals tournament with numerous students qualifying for state.
“I feel really good about this season,” says Botts. “We had a lot of fun and especially with the theme of our postseason which was Barbie.”
Many incredible students have really shined this season, especially at the state competition. Junior, Lilly Boyter, who semi-finaled in Programmed Oral Interpretation has been a rising star this past season. Freshman, Madyson Clark has also been credited for her incredible work on the team, having achieved being a semi-finalist in Poetry and Prose.
“(Lilly) Boyter joined the team this year and really jumped into it,” recalls Botts, a senior captain for the team. “She did a great job and she semi-finaled in her first event which is really hard to do. (Madyson) Clark is also a freshman on the team, it’s her first year and she double semi-finaled which is insane,” Botts finished.
Senior, Botts, and junior, Carmen Thomas, both placed fifth place in Duo Interpretation. Botts and Thomas are finalists in their division, while senior, TiffanyNichole Nolasco, also became a finalist in her division, and got sixth place in Programmed Oral Interpretation.
Some other students who semi-finaled are; Damion Lopez in Broadcasting/ Original Performance, Botts in Dramatic Interpretation, Nolasco in Humorous Interpretation, Thomas in Informative Speaking, Kolvin Dade in International Extemp, Maddi Morton in Original Performance, El Thompson in Prose, and finally, Emily Fleishhacker in U.S. Extemp. Two other students who quarter-finaled are Savannah Hugely in Broadcasting and Boyter in Declamation.
“We really just got close with everything that we have gone through this year, I feel like we really persevered through some really hard times,” says Botts.
The Speech Team had an incredible season this year and really gave it their all. All the team members have done exceptionally well and a special thank you to all of the coaches, Kirsten Reed, Joshua Coots, Dannielle Hunt, and Aaron Drew. Congratulations to all of the Speech Team students and good luck next season!
