Every year, a Northwest Indiana high school is sponsored by the Valparaiso Chain Of Lakes Watershed Group to partake in an environmental debate. This year, four Chesterton High School debate seniors were chosen to participate in the debate. The debaters will pair up to debate each other in teams. The question that is being asked this year is, “Should local governments limit the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers on lawns and gardens?”
The four seniors chosen were Payton Whalen, Sophia Worden, Patrick Hansen, and Lee Fleishhacker. All four participants will have debated for at least three years and are highly regarded in the Chesterton debate world.
“The annual environmental debate provides our students with a fantastic opportunity to both hone and showcase their skills,” said Head Debate Coach, Josh Coots to NWI Life.
The debate will take place at the Porter County Administration Building in Valparaiso, Indiana on April 15 at 6:30 PM. The event is meant to entertain, motivate, and inspire the public and those who view the event! Those who attend are also encouraged to stop by Uncle Menny’s Greek Pizza after the event.
“We’ve all worked very hard and I am excited for this debate!” said Hansen.
