Prom is probably one of the most looked-forward-to events for teenagers in high school. Picking out the perfect dress or tuxedo is another component that can either be very fun and exciting, or stressful and tough decision making. Recently on the social media app, TikTok, an interesting and controversial prom dress trend has arisen. The viral “Easter” or “brunch” style prom dresses have been circulating some pretty negative opinions rather than positive ones. Many have different opinions over this dress debacle, but is there a right choice?
Firstly, what exactly is an “Easter” prom dress? “Easter” prom dresses are typically very frilly and fluffy while also having floral designs or just plain solid colors as well. What makes these dresses stand out is the peculiar short length of the dresses. The typical traditional style prom dress is usually floor or ankle length with the addition of sparkles or even feathers. Some notable differences between the two are the lengths of the dresses along with the lengths of the sleeves, with the “Easter” style usually fashioning longer sleeves instead of the classic tank-top style sleeves in most traditional dresses. The most obvious style difference is probably how each style of dress stands out. The traditional prom dress is more shiny, sparkly, fun, and overall more of an attention-seeker, while the “Easter” dress style is more dull and boring giving it the “brunch” style appeal.
I think the reason for the very abrupt change in the prom dress trend is due to the more minimalistic style that has been circulating in today’s fashion. Minimalistic fashion focuses on being more simple and functional, which would explain why the new trend of prom dresses is short in length and more bland.
In my opinion, the “Easter” prom dress trend should not be a trend. While I do think some of the dresses are cute and fun, they are not prom dresses. Prom dresses are supposed to be glamorous and out there, not boring and lacking that attention-seeking quality that makes them unique. My main point is that I do not agree that they should be considered prom dresses when they lack all of the basic elements classic prom dresses have. Even some that I have seen look more like dresses that your mom forced you to wear to church, rather than a show-stopping gown you picked out.
The trend of floral designs on dresses, in my opinion, isn’t the most flattering dress design in the book. I am not saying floral designs overall are a bad choice, I just think they add to the dullness and blandness of the dress. The small floral prints spreading out through the dress give the dress the “brunch” style. The addition of random pieces of frilly fabric just makes the dress look more outrageous and outdated. Florals should stay a trend in the 2010s and should not be resurrected in today’s time.
Overall, the “Easter” or “brunch” style of prom dresses is probably one of the worst trends I have seen circulating the internet, due to the lack of creativity, style, and glam factor. I think these prom dresses are a bad choice and I hope for next year’s new trends, we decide to focus on something more show-stopping and just better.
