Maybe you’ve just come from reading my article on the Season of Sequels hitting the entertainment industry. Perhaps it has left you wondering what movies are coming out this year that aren’t remakes or continuations. Whether you wondered that or not, here is a list of movies that will be released during the remainder of 2024 that you should make sure you don’t miss!
- IF – May 17
John Krasinski is branching out from his roles in The Office and A Quiet Place and moving into new territory as director of this light-hearted children’s movie. The story follows a girl who can see people’s IFs or imaginary friends. In the film, she works to reunite other young kids with their imaginary counterparts. With many well-known actors in this film such as Steve Carell, Awkwafina, Blake Lively, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, and Ryan Reynolds, I can only have high expectations for a movie with such a comedic cast. IF will be available to watch in theaters.

4. Jim Henson Idea Man – May 31
As a huge fan of Jim Henson’s work, I am excited to pop on this Disney+ documentary. Henson’s genius puppetry is the backbone behind Dark Crystal, the Muppets, and Sesame Street. I am also a sucker for documentaries and biographies, making me hyped for this production. This film follows Jim Henson’s career, as well as his famous characters such as Kermit the Frog. Even if you think puppets are weird, which they are, I suggest watching this movie for another perspective on the actual art and effort that goes into their creation which morphs into loveable characters like Miss Piggy.
5. Young Woman and the Sea – May 31
Young Woman and the Sea is a biographical Disney film about Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel in 1926, and was also based on a book about Ederle’s life by Glenn Stout. Big-name actors such as Daisy Ridley, known for her role as Rey in the Star Wars films, and Lily James known for her work in Cinderella (2015) and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018), and Christopher Eccleston for his performance in Doctor Who.

This movie will be available to watch this summer both on Apple TV+ and in theaters.
7. Harold and the Purple Crayon – August 2
The 1955 children’s picture book, Harold and the Purple Crayon will be getting its own movie. Zachary Levi will play Harold, Lil Rel Howery will play Moose, and Zooey Deschanel will play Terry. The movie will fuse both animated and live-action elements to tell the story of a grown-up Harold who, with his purple crayon, transports and draws himself into the real world. This movie will be available to watch in theaters.

White Bird, based on R.J. Palacio’s collected works, follows Julian, a boy who has been expelled from school due to his mistreatment of Auggie Pullman. Julian pays a visit to his grandmother who tells him about her growing up in Nazi-occupied France, and how she was protected by someone’s kindness.
