- Turn in your work on time. This is probably the most important tip for success in high school. It may be true that some teachers accept work late, but most don’t. I’m not sure of the situation is at the middle school, but here at the high school you can get after school detention. Also, most classes in high school are faster paced, so having late work can really put you behind.
- Make the best use of your SRT, or student resource time. You should use every SRT to do homework or go talk to teachers. SRT is valuable homework time and review time. At the start of SRT, you should write a list of assignments due the next day. Do the one that looks the easiest and then so on until SRT is over.
- Take good notes during class. As soon as you get to class you should start taking notes. When taking notes you do not need to take note of everything. Instead, copy examples and write brief instructions. These notes are lifesavers for finals. Make sure you focus on important upcoming class news such as tests.
- Join a club. Joining a club is a great way to meet new people, form bonds with teachers, and learn new skills.
- Participate in class. A lot of classes in high school require participation for a grade. It’s good to start participating more, so you have a better understanding of the course work, by asking questions.
- Use your locker. CHS is a big school, I personally don’t like having to carry my stuff around school. It’s better to use your locker instead.
- Use a planner. You don’t have to use a physical planner for this, but you should find some way to keep track of your appointments and coursework.
- Pick electives that interest you. You should do electives that you are genuinely interested in, instead of taking ones that your friends are in. Freshman year is a great time to begin narrowing your potential career field choices.
- Don’t worry about things that you can’t control. This is good advice for life in general. If you can’t personally change anything then you shouldn’t be worrying about it. You shouldn’t care if someone doesn’t like you because nothing you can do will change their mind. You can’t change when there’s a test but you can study instead of worrying.
- Grow from your mistakes. It’s almost inevitable that you will miss some homework or fail a test. Instead of worrying and getting mad, it’s better to meet with your teacher and discuss where you fell short and focus on upcoming assignments so you can do better on the next assessment.
