CHS’s applied art students learned about cubism in their last unit, and had some outside-the-box interpretations. Each student created their own self-portrait, a selection of which will be displayed in a local hotel’s lobby.
The students learned how to use contrasting colors, unusual shapes, and unconventional textures to express themselves in art class. Pablo Picasso was a pioneer of the cubism movement in the 1900s, an era that reverted back to simple lines, shapes, and colors. These elements are clearly seen in the CHS students’ self-portraits. Many of them have mismatched eyes, oblong face shapes, and bright colors in place of neutral ones.
These pieces are on display now at the Das’ Gallery, which is located in the lobby of the Country Inn & Suites (2020 Laporte Avenue in Valparaiso). There will be a reception on January 30th from 4:30-6:30pm. The artworks will be on display throughout February.
