Gather your team! CHS’s Girls Rising is hosting a trivia night for all ages and genders on Tuesday, March 18 from 6:00-8:00 pm. It is taking place in the CHS library. Admission price will be $10 cash or check per person and includes 2 slices of Val’s Famous Pizza and Grinder’s pizza! To enter, you must have a team of 2-4 people. Proceeds from the event will go towards supplying period products for the surrounding community. Donations of menstrual products are also encouraged during the trivia night.
Girls Rising is a club at CHS that promotes gender equality for all students. They meet to discuss issues with inequality in various forms of media and situations. They also provide Pink Boxes for the students of CHS. These Pink Boxes provide menstrual products to everyone that needs them. They also host fundraisers and drives around the Chesterton community, such as their product drive at the Franciscan Health center, to help fund the Pink Boxes, so that students can access necessary menstrual products at zero cost. The Pink Boxes accept pads and tampons, and any donation boxes can be found in the Main Office, Nurse’s Office, Music Office, and the Library, and the drive will be happening throughout the entirety of March. The co-presidents of Girls Rising, CHS Seniors Chloe Mcgowan and Carmen Thomas, are heavily involved in the community and aim to cultivate a more inclusive and equal Chesterton.
“It’s been a very informational and empowering time for me, and I’m honored to be the current co-president… Prior to my involvement in the club, the idea of menstrual products being available to students in the school via dispensers was just a simple idea. Now, it has expanded to much more. The Pink Boxes provide safe, secure, and sanitized options for students’ needs without the aspects of embarrassment and shame,” stated Mcgowan.
Mcgowan has been in Girls Rising for all four years of high school, starting as treasurer and working her way up to co-president. Thomas has also taken on a very active role in the club for all four years of her high school career.
The club’s trivia night is coming up and will ask the teams questions over a variety of topics. Although there is not a specific theme, many questions will be based around woman-centered media.
“We hope to raise money for our club to be able to provide the school with enough products throughout the rest of this school year, and the next,” said Mcgowan when asked about the major benefits of hosting this event and why it is so vital to attend.
The top three winning teams will be awarded for their wide-ranging knowledge. Prizes that teams can look forward to include gift cards to a local business in town, and whichever team or person provides the most donated menstrual products will also be awarded regardless of their total points in the end.
Girls Rising of Chesterton is excited to see you there. Bring your A-game!
