Exciting changes are coming to Chesterton High School! Starting this spring break, from March 24-28, CHS will be beginning their highly anticipated renovations by installing new carpet in the building. These renovations are the beginning of a major improvement plan. This improvement plan aims to refine the school and consists of improvements totaling $14 million upgrades. These innovations include many different improvements, such as, new carpets, new soccer stadium, and new playgrounds at elementary schools.
The current CHS carpets have been in place since the school opened in 2000 and are long overdue for replacement. The Duneland School Board was awarded with a $960,360 contract with Midwest Tile & Interiors Inc, which is a company known for carpeting. The carpet renovations will begin over spring break; however, renovations will continue into the summer as well. The renovations will start with the WDSO classroom and will continue over spring break into about 5 classrooms in upper ‘A’ hallway.
“Over the summer around every 2 weeks they are going to chunk out a piece of the building and place carpet. The carpet is all going to be squares, so if they are stained, we can replace them easily. The carpet will be lighter which will enhance the lighting in the classroom. Over time we will replace the lighting in the classrooms, which will make an effect,” CHS principal Brent Martinson stated.
The addition of the new carpet will be beneficial to the staff and students at Chesterton High School. The carpet renovations are just the start to the new improvements of Duneland schools. In addition to the new carpet, the improvement plan will include construction of a new soccer stadium at CHS. By widening the size of the soccer field, it will lead to more space for more extracurriculars to practice at one time, and provide additional safety to our athletes. Previously, CHS athletic trainers assigned to the soccer teams had to go back and forth between CHS and Dogwood Park, to monitor both teams. Now they will have both teams in one location, making it more manageable for these trainers, should a medical emergency take place.
“An advantage to fixing the soccer stadium is that there will be a practice stadium for the marching band to practice as well…I think it will help other kids, not just the soccer kids,” CHS principal Brent Martinson stated.
Chesterton High School is not the only school getting renovations, as these improvements plan to upgrade the Duneland School Districts all together. The playgrounds at Duneland elementary schools will be replaced as well.
These new innovations will provide a better, and more engaging environment that Duneland Students and Staff are excited to see move forward!
