Trojans Also Tie South Bend St. Joe 1-1

This week’s DAC matchup for girls  ended in a success. The long time rival who always gives an equal matchup for the girls team ended in a 2-1 victory. Gina Geenen scored both goals, the first goal coming on a cross field pass from Tewabech Seerup. After receiving the pass, Geenen took a couple dribbles, and fired a rocket off of her right root, just out of reach of the goalkeeper’s arm.

The second goal was an assist by Grace Bamber, in the 68th minute.  The ball sailed through the air, roughly 35 yards, bouncing once, causing the goalie to come out in an attempt to make a save. Geenen beat the goalie to the ball, hit it off of her head, again over the outstretched arms of the goalie and into the net. The crowd erupted as the Trojans had taken a 2-1 lead. The Vikings had opportunities in the last twelve minutes, squandered them all. Carly Balas played like the all-stater she is (Balas was a preseason All- State selection) and stopped 10 goals.

The Trojans returned to action Thursday Night against South Bend St. Joe, who previously beat them in regionals last year. Thursday was a tie ending 1-1, sadly the Trojans had to play without their better forward, Seerup, for all but about 10 minutes. The ladies persevered and Annalisa Hackett found the net in the 20th minute. St. Joe responded with just five seconds left in the first half. Both teams came out in the second half, and played tremendous defense. The Trojans held the Indians scoreless in the second half, yet could not manufacture a goal of their own. Although the tie was not the result they wanted, the team can still build off a tie against the #8 team in the state. The Lady Trojans return to action on Tuesday September 7, 2021, where they will host Merrillville for their Senior Night.
