Pinned Down a Third Place Finish

Chesterton is advancing six athletes to Semi State after a third place finish.

The CHS Wrestlers traveled to Crown Point for this year’s ISHAA Regional meet this past Saturday, February 5. The Trojans brought back third place, advancing six out of twelve athletes to Semi-State. 

Brent Gengnagel, Ryan Kasper, Connor Katsofaros, Amilcar Lemus, and Ben Shaffer had tough first round losses, ending their season. With years ahead of them, the Sandscript is anticipating many great things next season. Additionally, Jude Mochen’s career ended in a first round loss, but he had a phenomenal four years as a CHS Wrestler.

Isaiah Wilson had a big first round win against Lake Central to advance, where he had a third period pin to move onto finals. In the final round, Wilson took second in the 126 weight class against returning state runner up Logan Fraizer of Crown Point.

Hayden DeMarco had a huge first round pin to advance into the second round, then advanced to the finals with yet another pin. In a convincing finals performance,  H. DeMarco took home the 120 pound regional championship, winning 5-0 by decision.

Chase Staubus had a one point win to advance to the second round, and took fourth to wrestle at semi state this weekend.

Gage DeMarco had a first round pin, followed by another big win in the second round, advancing him to the finals. In finals against Crown Points, Will Clark, G. DeMarco fell short after a very close match, all the way to the second takedown and G. DeMarco took home second place. Clark and DeMarco met earlier in the season at the DAC meet. 

Aidan Torres had a dominant performance this past Saturday, going 3-0 and bring back the regional championship at the 145 pound weight class. After a first round win, Torres advanced to the second round, winning and continuing on into finals. Torres took the number one spot as he advanced to the 145 pound weight class at Semi- State this Saturday.

Luke Stento had a tough loss in round two 8-4 and later wrestled for the third place spot. Stento won the third place match, advancing him into Semi-State. 

The six Trojan wrestlers advancing will compete in Semi-State tomorrow (2-12) at East Chicago High School, and look to secure their place in next weekend’s state finals.
