CHS Girls Soccer off to Strong Start

Lady Trojans 4-1; looking like a force to be reckoned with

The Chesterton Girls Soccer team played in the South Bend St. Joseph Indian Invite in South Bend last Friday. The Trojans were riding high after a dominating 14-0 win over LaPorte on Tuesday that featured a hat trick by freshman Addy Avey in her CHS debut.

Moving on to last Friday, the girls prevailed in their first game at Invite, defeating Ft. Wayne Carroll 1-0 with a goal by Gina Geenen, and moved on to the second round that was played on Saturday morning. In the second round, Chesterton found themselves face-to-face with the defending state champions, and current #1 ranked team, Homestead. The Trojans kept the game incredibly close through the first half, matching each of the first two Homestead goals. They went into halftime trailing 3-2 with goals by Adey Avey and Tewabech Seerup. In the second half the Spartans showed why they are ranked #1 by scoring 2 more goals and finishing the game with a final score of 5-2. While the girls were disappointed with the loss, they proved that they can remain competitive with any team in the state.

The team bounced back after the loss to Homestead by taking on Penn later that afternoon. The Trojans fell behind early, 1-0 after a free kick goal, but they didn’t let that discourage them. The Trojans rallied back, and went on to score four unanswered goals. Grace Bamber, Seerup, Olivia Virgil, and Geenen provided the goals in the offensive explosion.

Chesterton continued their dominance with a 9-0 victory over Michigan City on Tuesday. Seerup had a great game, netting 3 goals and 2 assists. Bamber and Geenen had 2 goals each and one assist apiece. Adey Avey and Olivia Montes also had 1 goal each in this big win.

Chesterton Girls Soccer is now 4-1. The girls are looking to pick up another win against arch rival Valparaiso on Tuesday, August 30. The game is on the road, held at Thomas Jefferson Middle school, since Valpo doesn’t allow soccer to be played on their turf. The JV will begin at 5pm, with the varsity to follow after 15 minutes of warm ups. If you are free, come out to TJ and support the Trojans.
