CHS Hosts Middle School Athletic Development Camp

Getting Middle Schoolers Ready for Sports at CHS

Carl Harding, Sandscript Writer

Chesterton High School will be hosting an athletic development camp for 7th and 8th grade students who are interested in participating in sports at CHS in the future. At the development camp, students will learn techniques that are associated with strength, speed, and agility training to develop the athletic skills needed to compete against other schools across the state. CHS Head Strength and Conditioning coach Matt Wagner will be in charge of the development camp and will assist the young athletes in doing their best to get them ready for their future careers.

“It sets them up for success in high school and I want to teach them and coach them the proper techniques and movements to teach them the basics,” said Coach Wagner.

The camp will be held in CHS’s field house (J303) near entrance 31 and the weight room (H295) near entrance 34. The development camp will last from winter to late spring of 2023, there are two sessions of the camp that will take place. The first session will be held from January 30 to March 22, lasting eight weeks and the second session will be held from April 3 to May 10, lasting six weeks.

“There are two phases really: agility, and power development. We teach them how to run correctly. We teach them about lateral movements, putting force on the ground and pushing off that back leg. Also, just [teaching] foundational movements in the weightroom… a big one is the bilateral squat. Finally, [we’re] just teaching them how to do some of those very basic upper body lifts, like basic presses.” Wagner explained.

Lessons for both sessions will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 pm to 7 pm and information on specific dates are provided on the image below. As for the cost of the camp, parents can pay for both sessions which will cost $125, or if you want to pay for only one session, session one will cost $75 and session two will cost $60. If parents have any questions they can email the Trojan Athlete Development and their questions will be answered.
