Peaches From Super Mario Bros Will Get Stuck in Your Head

Mario Bros, a classic well known arcade game that has been around since the 80’s, was recently adapted into a movie called The Super Mario Bros Movie. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, this animated adventure came out in theaters on April 5. This movie definitely outdid the Super Mario Bros movie from 1993 which was a live action version of the popular game. So, finally, three decades later we received the The Super Mario Bros Movie which it is safe to say: it did not disappoint.

The movie follows Mario (Chris Pratt) and his brother Luigi (Charlie Day) as they navigate the plumbing business.  As an effort to solve a major plumbing issue within their city, they end up disappearing into the classic green pipe. The two brothers end up separated in this strange new world leaving Mario in the mushroom kingdom to eventually meet Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy). However for not so lucky Luigi he ends up captured by Bowser (Jack Black). Mario and Princess Peach race against the clock to save the Mushroom Kingdom and Luigi, as they team up to stop Bowser.

The Super Mario Bros Movie was full of references to the games and gave a wave of nostalgia for the audience. I found myself laughing every time Bowser came on screen showing his unrequited love for Princess Peach. In fact, Bowser performing “Peaches”, a song dedicated to Princess Peach, was the best thing I have watched in a really long time. Seeing a character like Bowser pour his heart out on a piano solo was really incredible and hilarious to watch. The song is eligible for the Oscars Best Original Song, which is absolutely amazing. Jack Black truly did a great job with his performance for this movie, no one else could have played it as perfectly as him.

This movie was a great family watch and it is worth rewatching even after seeing it once. My only complaint however is the movie was too short.  A grand total of 92 minutes long and it personally felt like the plot needed more time to develop. The storyline just felt rushed and if they gave the movie more time it would have been perfect.

In the end, The Super Mario Bros Movie was a good movie! The animation in the movie was amazing and the voice actors did an incredible job voicing their characters. Princess Peach being portrayed as a strong female lead instead of a damsel in distress was lovely, and sets a good example for young girls. I would highly recommend seeing this movie and watching it for a family movie night.
