Indiana Dunes is famous for its beaches and aquatics. It has over 15 miles of pristine lakefront though it only has about a third of a mile of open swim area. Indiana dunes and has recently taken the step to limit swimming time. Under new rules, swimming is only permitted on the weekends when a lifeguard is present regardless of wave height. Some local residents are concerned with the ability of people to follow these rules.
“I think that it’s going to be misinterpreted so people will think that they can swim during the weekends regardless of if there’s a lifeguard,” said Mr Lukach.
Some students are perplexed by the arbitrary limiting of the hours. “ People still drown on the weekdays,” said Zoey Olsen, freshman. Previously swimming was allowed on weekdays when a lifeguard was present . The decision was made due to a lifeguard shortage.
