A couple of weeks ago, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) released an announcement that they will be testing the Emergency Alert System (EAS) alarm and the Wireless Emergency Alert on October 4th, 2023. The alarm will sound at 10:20 am CT and a message will be sent to all cellular devices in the United States reading:
“This is a test of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”
Cell phones will receive a text message about Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), and radio towers will receive the regular EAS.
The purpose of this test is for authorities to practice sending alerts to citizens to ensure that they are safe and prepared in the case of a national emergency. The text message will also be translated into English and Spanish, depending on the settings according to the specific device. This is great practice in the case of a real emergency, so taking the drill seriously not only ensures your safety in the future but for others as well.
