The Boys Varsity Basketball team is returning to the courts for their annual Maroon and Gold Scrimmage on Saturday, November 11. Each year at this scrimmage, the Varsity and JV Boys Basketball teams are separated into two smaller Maroon and Gold teams and they play against each other in a practice game. This game accumulates a large crowd and is an opportunity for the fans to meet this year’s players. Last year, the team ended their season with an excellent record of 19-5 and they are coming back with high hopes for an even better season.
In previous years, the Boys Varsity Basketball team has gained much attention for their ability to play an entertaining style of basketball. In the 2021-22 season, Travis Grayson was a name that all Trojan Basketball fans were widely familiar with. The senior point guard led his team throughout the season and delivered an amazing performance each game. That year, the Trojans effortlessly beat all their regular-season opponents and became conference champions with an undefeated record of 29-0. The team was fortunate enough to compete at the state championship but took a hard loss against the Cathedral Fighting Irish. Grayson, however, ended on a high note after finishing top 5 in Mr Basketball voting. The Boys Varsity Basketball team made history that year and Chesterton will never forget it.
In the 2022-23 season, the boys worked diligently against each team they faced. Unfortunately, the boys ended their season at regionals where they fell to the Penn Kingsmen. Overall, the team finished their conference season undefeated for the second year in a row and they were sectional champions once again. Having won both back-to-back sectional titles and undefeated conference seasons, the team has high expectations for this year.
The first practice for the team officially began on November 6, but the team has been working together for months to prepare themselves for their very first game which will take place on Saturday, November 25.
“We started (practicing) after we lost regionals last year. We worked two days a week until the start of June when we had games and everything. We took July off, August off, and then September through now we’ve been practicing. We have practices every day after school now from 3-5, ” said senior Tyler Parrish.
The scrimmage game will begin around 6 p.m., shortly after the National Anthem and introduction to the players. The Maroon and Gold teams will play for two quarters and at the conclusion of their quarters, the freshman, 8th grade, and 7th grade teams will follow suit and scrimmage each other. While the other teams are playing, the Varsity team will be out in the hall hosting a meet and greet for Trojans fans to meet their favorite players. Entry to the scrimmage is free for all fans and before the game, 50 CHS basketball t-shirts will be free for students, but they are first-come-first-serve and they go fast!
