In a significant development for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers in Northwest Indiana, plans for a substantial upgrade to the Calumet Trail have been unveiled. The Calumet Trail, a cherished pathway for hikers, bikers, and nature enthusiasts has one major flaw: the trail is a very uneven surface of loose gravel, causing flooding issues.
Stretching along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, the Calumet Trail offers breathtaking views of the lake, serene woodlands, and diverse wildlife habitats. As one of the region’s most popular outdoor destinations, the trail attracts visitors from across the state and beyond.
“It is a long time coming,” Rafi Wilkinson of the National Park Service told the Chicago Tribune. “Developing a multi-use pedestrian train through the Indiana Dunes National Park has been a priority for 40 years.”
One of the proposed upgrades includes improvements to the trail’s surface to provide a smoother and more durable path for walkers, joggers, and cyclists. Additionally, rest areas, picnic spots, and restroom facilities will be renovated and expanded to accommodate the growing number of visitors to the trail. This improvement will ensure greater accessibility for individuals of all abilities and reduce the risk of accidents or injuries. The upgrades will provide added comfort and convenience for those exploring the trail for leisure or recreation.
“The environmental assessment included consulting with indigenous people tribes who have claims on the land, so there were slight adjustments to avoid sensitive cultural resources. The impact on wildlife and plants was also evaluated,” Rafi Wilkinson of the National Park Service told the Chicago Tribune.
Local officials and community leaders have expressed their enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its potential to boost tourism, promote outdoor recreation, and improve the overall quality of life in the region. The upgraded Calumet Trail is expected to attract even more visitors, bolstering the local economy and fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural beauty of Northwest Indiana.
As the Calumet Trail undergoes this transformative upgrade, anticipation is high among outdoor enthusiasts eager to explore its revitalized pathways and experience the beauty of Northwest Indiana’s natural landscapes like never before.
