On Saturday, April 1, the Chesterton High School girl’s varsity tennis team started their 2024 campaign and traveled and competed in the 8-team Logansport tennis tournament and secured first place in all five positions. All of the teams competed in three matches in their own different sections and brackets. The team that got the most points from everyone that played won. During the double’s flights, Senior Ava Komp and sophomore Amelia Smith won their #1 Doubles flight after their win against Carol which scored (6-0). Ellery Denny and Anisa Faroh walked away with the 2-doubles title after the win against Benton Central, and Lewis Cass.
“I played a lot of pinpoints and I hit my spots really well during the tournament. I was aggressive when I needed to be, overall, my team and I played very well,” sophomore Mackenzie Kania stated.
The Chesterton High School Girls tennis team spent a lot of their time preparing and practicing for this tournament before the actual day of it.
“Individually, I did a lot of training after practices, and before the season even started. As a group we would work very hard at practices, we played each other how we did during games. It was a great day, and we all felt really happy about this win. Everyone played extremely well, and it was really fun!” sophomore Mackenzie Kania exclaimed.
In the end, the Trojans ended up winning with their total of 73 points, which was followed by Laporte with 43 points, Lewis Cass with 24, Benton Central with 20, Logansport with 16, Rossville with 8, and lastly Caroll with 8 points. The team did an amazing job and ended with the points scored, Ellery Denny (12), Ava Komp (12), Aleksa Sorgic (11), Lauren Pilarski (11), Anisa Faroh (11), Mackenzie Kania (10), Amelia Smith (10), Lizzy Navarro (10).
Since that tournament, the tennis team has continued their winning ways with a win (4-1) against Plymouth on April 11, a win (4-1) against Laporte on April 18, and a win (4-1) against Portage to improve the team to 3-0 in DAC play. On Tuesday, CHS defeated the Crown Point Bulldogs 4-1 advancing their record to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play. The remainder of the conference schedule includes Lake Central, Merrillville, and Michigan City. During the stretch after Logansport, the team did suffer one defeat at the hands of an extremely talented Culver team. Next up for the Trojans is Lake Central, tonight May 2, at 4:30pm.
