Folks, the time has come. Start cleaning out your schedules to make room for the annual National Honors Society Beach Cleanup! Students and community members will meet at the Indiana Dunes State Park Pavillion on Sunday, April 13th at 10:30am.
Beach cleanups are important to maintenance. We are incredibly lucky to have a historic State Park so close to home, but we are not the only ones who value it: tourists come from all over the country to visit our Dunes. While this is excellent for the local economy, it often leaves our beaches full of trash. No matter the size of the trash, it is harmful to our Dunes ecosystem. Beach cleanups are important, because they balance out some of that litter left over from the summer and keep trash out of the Great Lakes.
Cleanups don’t just protect our beaches and lake ecosystems, though; they also spread awareness about marine litter. They encourage people to get involved in their communities and take action against
“At NHS, we want to do our part to help the community around us. And we think cleaning up the environment is a great way to achieve this,” said Luke Sparks, the Treasurer of Chesterton’s Chapter of National Honors Society, who has been planning this event for months.
Garbage bags and gloves will be provided, but community members are encouraged to bring their own. There’s no need to sign up, just be there. Spread the word, and we’ll see you there!
