This year, the Boy’s Varsity Golf team is made up of five seniors, starting with Noah Bazil, Bo Smith, Joe Ennis, and then Phil and Paul Scott. The team will participate in a total of 21 matches leading up to Sectionals. If they make it into the Top 5 at Sectionals, they will then go to Regionals and possibly even State Finals.
More than half of their matches have been weekend tournaments. In weekend tournaments, golfers play 18 total holes on a given golf course. The remainder of their contests are after-school matches, where golfers play just nine holes, due to the shorter amount of time to play. For team scoring of the event, the team takes the four best scores out of their five varsity players and adds them up. The CHS Varsity Boys Golf team averages around 315 strokes per 18 holes.
Since the beginning of March, this year’s golf team has been striving to reach the season’s ultimate goal: get back to State and beat Valparaiso. Last year, Chesterton did not place well during State, ranking 15 out of 18 schools.
“Valpo will always be our biggest competition, simply because they are our rival and they’re always fun to compete against,” senior Noah Bazil said.
So far, the Varsity Boys Golf team has played 17 matches since the beginning of April. Of those 17 matches, seven were weekend matches, and the rest were after-school matches. Their biggest setback this year was how they began the season, with bad weather affecting their ability to play and practice. Due to the weather, the team couldn’t practice as much as they would have liked before jumping into the season.
“Expectations are to finish top 10 at State, at least, so hopefully better than that but that is the expectation for this year,” senior Joe Ennis said.
The Varsity Boys Golf team has set their sights high for their season this year, intending to make it to State and place better than they did last year. They still have seven more matches to be played until Sectionals, with diverse competition.
