Sectional Success

On Friday, October 29, the Chesterton High School Football Team kicked off their postseason play with a matchup against a familiar DAC foe, Portage High school. Earlier this season, the Trojans defeated the Indians, winning 27-0, at Portage. The Trojans continued that trend defeating the Indians again, this time by a count of 16-0.  For the second time in three years, the Chesterton Trojans are heading to the Sectional Final, with yet another chance to capture the schools first ever sectional in football.

Last Friday, the first half was a rough one, and a scoreless one, as Mother Nature had different ideas for what this game should look like.  Rain fell all day, and then more throughout the entire game.  In addition, players battled chilling temperatures lower than any game so far this season.  Sadly, during the second quarter, a brutal hit led to the end of Senior leader Luke Stento’s season.  Stento suffered a leg injury that stopped the game. Moments later, he was taken off the field on the medical cart. The Sandscript wishes him a speedy recovery, and hopes to see him on the mat this winter for wrestling, and on the track this coming spring. Wishing his team luck, Stento left for medical help and pushed his team by giving a little extra motivation for the win, in honor of their fellow teammate.

The Trojans went out in the second half with a full head of steam, and during the third quarter, Ethan Troy scampered in with two touchdowns. The first touchdown was a one yard run and the second, a 6 yard run. Kicker Alex Drewes had two extra point kicks that were successful making the score 14-0. The Trojan defense recorded a safety for good measure increasing the lead to 16-0.

Chris Mullen led the team in passing yards with 31 yards, while Garrett Lewis led in rushing yards with 56 yards.  Troy led in receiving yards with 11 yards. The Trojan defense was led by Isaiah Fowler with eight tackles, two assisted tackles, one sack, and four tackles for loss. Gage DeMarco also stood out for the defense, finishing with six tackles and four assisted tackles. The Trojans will be playing in the Sectional Finals game this Friday night against the Penn Kingsmen at Penn High School, so plug that in to your GPS!  The kickoff for Friday’s game is 6:30 Central Standard Time.
