For most athletes, an injury slows things down. For this 6’1″ senior, it changed everything, just not in the way you might expect.
After being forced to give up basketball due to injury, the focus shifted entirely to baseball for OF Rob Czarniecki. Getting healthy became the priority, but it didn’t stop there. The work only intensified, hitting six days a week, lifting five or six, because in a sport built on failure, there’s no shortcut to success. You earn it in the cages, in the weight room, and in the hours no one sees.
And right now, it’s paying off.
“I’m better than ever,” said the Indiana Top 10 prospect. “My swing feels the best it has in a long time.”
He’s a senior who earned first-team all-state honors, and he’s all-in on baseball. He’s committed to continuing his career at the University of Kentucky. But the grind hasn’t come without sacrifice. While others spent weekends hanging out, he was putting in work. Now, as the season ramps up with five games next week, there’s still not much downtime.
“You miss out on things,” he admitted. “Especially looking back the past three years. But this is what I love to do.” That love shows up in more than just performance. It’s in the mindset. It’s in the relationships. “This year has made me realize how important relationships are,” he said. “The people who come watch me, my parents, my friends, that means a lot.”
There are moments he’ll never forget, like winning sectionals sophomore year and dumping Gatorade on Coach Bogner. And looking ahead, his goals are just as clear.
“I want to be a professional baseball player,” he said. He knows whose dugout he’d like to be in: “The White Sox, that’s my childhood team and my Dad’s favorite team.”
For now, though, it’s about the present: with a .667 batting average, he’s focused on his next at bat, and his boys on the team.
He isn’t interested in labels or highlight reels, though, noting: “I don’t want to be in the spotlight. I would rather just handle my business and leave it at that.”
But he does acknowledge one label that might be worth taking into account: “Warning: can be hangry.” Good thing there’s plenty of peanut butter and grape jelly sandwiches to satisfy any pregame cravings!
