Chesterton, IN. The Lady Trojans shut out the LaPorte Slicers on April 29, 10-0.
The softball team continued its strong season with a 10–0 win over La Porte, fueled by steady pitching, consistent offense, and strong team chemistry, even on a cloudy day threatening rain in the lower 40s.
Sophomore pitcher Payton Cherep said the win felt especially meaningful after difficult matchups against La Porte last season. “It felt really good,” Cherep said. “Last year we had a rough start against them, and this year we won the past three games.” Junior third baseman Jillienne Pittman agreed. “There was some trash talking, and it feels so good that we beat them,” Pittman said.
Both players pointed to the first inning as a key moment, with the team’s defense setting the tone early. Cherep finished with eight strikeouts in five innings while trusting the defense behind her. “If one person is up, we’re all up,” she said of the offense. When a Lady Trojan bats, “we are together in a huddle, building off of each other’s energy, making sure they know they have a support system,” said Pittman of the chants and songs the girls sing to keep the momentum going.
Pittman highlighted the team’s chemistry and support system as major strengths throughout the game. “If anything goes wrong, someone next to you supports you,” she said. The ladies credit their pasta parties with team bonding. And they highlight their eight-year relationship, through travel ball and high school seasons as a major contributor to their success. “It’s great to watch someone grow and succeed, and bond with someone on the team,” said Pittman.

The Trojans stayed consistent offensively, scoring in every inning while maintaining the shutout. “The coaches preach, ‘Don’t fall off,’” Pittman said. “That is really important.”
Individually, Cherep said she was proud of her consistency in the circle, while Pittman highlighted strong hitting and a double play with teammate and second baseman Lexi Smith — the team’s first of the season.
The players said the team’s improved DAC record, currently 7-2, and strong bond have helped fuel this year’s success. “We’ve been playing together for so long,” Cherep said. “It’s nice to watch each other grow and succeed.”
Looking ahead, both players said the team’s focus remains on making another postseason run and competing for their second consecutive sectional championship and regional success.
