Every year, seniors gather together and walk across the stage, diploma in hand and dreams for what lies ahead. Then the lights fade, the audience dies down, and before long, many are packing for college – sometimes even before their high school graduation. At Chesterton High School, this is all possible thanks to dual enrollment, which allows students to earn college credit while still in high school.
Chesterton High School offers 65 dual credit courses. They have partnerships with Ivy Tech Community College, Purdue Northwest, Ball State University, University of Southern Indiana, Vincennes University, and Indiana University. Many courses fall under the Indiana College Core Transfer Library, meaning credits earned can be transferred to participating colleges and universities.
College credit has many benefits, one of them allowing for early graduation. However, anyone applying should take a look at the requirements. For starters, they have to reach out to Ivy Tech for an official college number. Then, they will create a MyIvy Account to register as a college student. Through this application, they will take the English and Math STEM Knowledge Assessments, which require a score of 70 or higher to pass. Students will then register for a course with their teacher. If they pass the specific class with a C or better, dual credit will be earned.
These courses are a great opportunity for students to prepare for college. In addition to the things this program offers, try to know the deadlines and requirements of each college. Information about this can be found on the slideshow below. No need to worry, for here are links available on who to contact. Below are some of the deadlines for Ivy Tech College fall courses. Try to keep the following dates in mind if considering dual credit. Firstly, Knowledge Assessments are due on September 17th for fall and full-year classes. The registration deadline is September 22nd for fall and full-year classes. The late add/drop registration is October 6th for fall-only classes. If needed, the withdrawal deadline is November 21st for fall-only courses.
Ultimately, dual credit gives students a chance to save money, prepare for college, challenge themselves, and lessen the stress. This process does not have to be lonely because our school has representatives who will help. Reach out to Mrs. Hawkins through her email below for information. Mrs. Victoria Palomo is also here every Friday to help with Ivy Tech administration. Do not feel unmotivated, because anything is possible with this opportunity. After all, a small spark can ignite a whole fire. Students should do dual credit now to save money, get ahead, and gain confidence in the future.
