The Chesterton Trojans (3-2) took back the Campbell Cup on Friday, Sept. 19, with a hard-fought 24-16 victory over rival Valparaiso (1-4).
Andrew Goveia opened the scoring with a touchdown run to give the Trojans early momentum. A frequent ball carrier, Goveia explained how he keeps the ball moving down the field. “It helps that we have a great offensive line that does its job well. Knowing that I can count on my teammates helps me to do better,” #13 said. And how does he decide to go for extra yards or protect the ball? The RB explained his strategy: “It’s a play-by-play thing, but I always try to protect the ball.”
Quarterback Hunter Body kept the offense rolling, connecting with Patrick Mochen and Gus Wisch for touchdown passes.
Kicker Mace Redman was perfect on the night, drilling all three extra points and adding a clutch 41-yard field goal. “When lining up for the 41 yard field goal, I thought about how someone would buy me Taco Bell if I made it,” Redman explained. ” This was a game I badly wanted to win, so putting points on the board to beat the team down south was a feeling like no other.”
The defense sealed the win when Lucas Anderson came up with a key interception to stop a late Viking drive. With the victory, Chesterton not only claimed bragging rights but also brought the Campbell Cup back home.
