Many students in Chesterton High School struggle with their studies, whether it is Algebra 1 to French 5. In the school cafeteria, Emily Ilges and Lillian Escobar, high school honors students, worked together to create a small, all-welcome, study group after school from 3:10 to 4:15 p.m. every Friday. Emily Ilges states that anyone, despite their classes or grades, is welcome into the group to get help with work, help others with work, or simply to spend time with someone.
Both of the study group’s leaders agree that this group would benefit many students and that anyone can come around, even for one or two sessions, if that is what he or she wants. Lillian Escobar, during her interview, revealed that if the group were to become an actual club that she would not want to have a sponsored teacher, as it may feel unwelcoming to students. Her words prove that the group leaders do care about the members’ feelings and comfort. Emily and Lillian both encourage their members to talk to them if they have any problems with the members, as student safety is one of their top priorities, next to helping with work. Not interested in studying or working and just need an escape after a long week? No worries! The group is very welcome to people just coming around to hang around, as long as they are not disrupting the students who are working. The study group is planning small activities, like a candy bucket, or to just bring snacks for their members.
The Study Group meets every Friday in the cafeteria from 3:10 to 4:15.
