The Basics of Football for Dummies:
It’s that time again, Football season. If you don’t know anything about football, this is the article for you. If you just need a refresher on the rules of football, this article is for you. If you don’t want to have anymore of those awkward moments where your dad is screaming at the TV because the Bears missed a field goal and you don’t even understand what the heck just happened, THIS is the article for you.
So let’s break down some of the basics:
Football Game: Football is a game played by 2 opposing teams and the goal is to score the most amount of points
Touchdown: Touchdowns are very important to know about. This is the main way to score points in the game. When a player scores a touchdown, their team gains 6 points. They gain these points by running and making it into the opponent’s “End Zone”.
End Zone: Either end of the football field where you can score touchdowns.

Quarterback: A Quarterback is a player on each team that is the main leader, especially for offense. They have to use quick decision making and lead the team. This is the most well known player on a team. Some examples of quarterbacks include players like Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Caleb Williams(Bears Quarterback).
Rookie: A Rookie is a new member of a team, and is most likely to make some mistakes at first. A rookie can be a coach or player. In some instances, a team can be called a rookie team if they are facing another team that is more likely to win, or are more experienced with winning.
Goal Posts:
These are the yellow goal things at each end of the field, right by the end zone.

One-Point Conversion:
This literally means that if you score a touchdown, you get a chance to score 1 extra point. This extra point is earned if the players kick the football into the goal post.
Penalties:
Penalties are not good, especially when it’s against your own team. Penalties can occur when a player makes an illegal (or against the rules) play, or when other things go wrong.

Now that you have learned some football terms, it’s now time to briefly explain the game, and some of its history.
Football comes from sports like rugby and soccer, and was officially created in North America. Even though football is called football, nowadays, football is mostly played by catching the ball, and is kicked to try to score field goals, one-point conversions, punt, kickoffs, .
In the game of football, it can feel complicated and confusing, but all you have to really know are the basics to watch, understand, and have conversations about it.
- When the game starts, both teams line up in the middle of the field, facing each other.
2. Then, one of the teams does a kickoff and the receiving team tries to catch the ball before it hits the ground. If they catch it, they can try to run on the field and get to certain yard lines, (such as the 30,40,50, ect… yd lines) and depending on how far they get, that’s where the other team will start their play. Once the game has started, the teams compete against each other to try to score the most amount of points in the game.

Here’s some other line names
3. Each team has 4 downs or tries, to advance up the field and score a touchdown, or 6 points. If a score is made (resulting in the chance of a 1 or 2 point conversion) or unsuccessful, the next team begins the same process.
4. This goes back and forth between teams. The players have breaks between each quarter, and at half-time.
5. By the end of the game, whoever scores the most points, wins the game!
The game of football is really fun to watch, as long as you have some understanding of the game. The players in the football game coordinate plans and have to make quick moves and decisions. Football is not a basic game, it has so many cool tricks and game plans and crazy stuff, like Hail Mary’s! Plus, look around! Are people cheering? Use context clues and ask questions!
