The Chesterton High School Girls’ Swim and Diving Team officially started their season on October 27, diving into practices where they learned about teamwork, swimming skills, and endurance. By channeling their hard work into competition, the team defeated Merrillville with a crushing blow of 152-28 in their first meet. For the team, the momentum built by this win has created a palpable excitement.
So far, the Trojans have not lost a single local conference match. Moving with speed and precision, they placed third in the Carroll Invitational on Dec. 20, scoring 455.5 points. Peyton Ostertag led the way and scored 103.7 points for the team. On Dec. 16, Chesterton beat Valparaiso 130-55. Brenley Bonez and Adalyn Laughner placed top two in the high-point category.
The team continued its strong performance on Jan. 6 against Munster, sweeping all three relay events. Individual event winners include Peyton Osertag, Bella Walters, and Brenley Bonez. So far, the Trojans remain undefeated as they continue to build upon the legacy of strong athletic performance at CHS. Be sure to attend and support the team at one of their upcoming meets before the season ends. The schedule is provided below.
Freshman Mckenzie Soto has demonstrated hard work as a powerhouse throughout the season. During an interview, Soto highlighted that the most exciting part of the season has been getting to know the team and coaches. She noted that normal practices differ from club practices, especially when training hard and working together as a team.
Soto looks up to team captain Peyton Osertag, describing her as a strong leader who is very coachable. For students planning to join the swim team, Soto encourages people to “go for it” and keep pushing themselves. Soto added that it is important to keep a positive attitude to help the team perform well and boost confidence. To end with a message, Soto said, “I want to give a shoutout to all the girls because they have been dominating this season.”
