Easter for Catholics was last Sunday, on April 5th, and the Greek Orthodox Easter is on April 12th. Easter is a widely celebrated holiday and it is the most important holiday for Christians. Easter reminds Christians of the Resurrection of Jesus from the Dead, which is a pretty big deal. On top of that, Passover this year crosses with Easter. Passover is an eight-day holiday for Jewish people. It is the remembrance of how Moses, with the Help of God, freed the Israelites from the Pharaoh.
People celebrate Easter in many different ways, one of them being a little less traditional – the Easter Bunny.
The Easter Bunny is not from the Bible, but is thought to have come from Pagan holidays, possibly from the Festival of Eostre. The Festival of Eostre is the celebration of the goddess of spring, who takes the form of a Bunny or Rabbit. Later, the idea of the Easter Bunny came to America in the 1700s in Pennsylvania from German Immigrants. Now, the Easter Bunny has become a symbol of chocolate, baskets, and Easter egg hunts!
At CHS, several students just celebrated Easter last Sunday, and let’s hear how they planned on spending it!
Elise Engels was going to spend time with her family on Easter. “I’m going to my grandparents’ house to eat dinner, and we are going to play games, any type of card games. This is because we don’t really do the Easter Bunny or Easter egg hunts. We do more of a Secret Santa, but Easter version”. One of Engels’ sisters is at college and cannot make it home for Easter, so she plans to send her the Easter basket that she made for her for their “Easter” secret santa.
Sophia Lugo also planned on spending time with her family. “I’m going to head over to my grandparents’ house, and we will do Easter egg hunts.” She also still receives a basket for Easter.
When C.J Wiatrowski was asked how he celebrates Easter, he responded, “How we celebrate is we have our little brother, and he, of course, still believes in the Bunny, so our grandpa dresses up as the Easter bunny, and he hands us buckets filled with stuff. Then we go to our grandma’s and have an Easter egg search. There are three golden eggs, and they’re really hard to find. There’s usually money and a king-size candy bar. There’s also regular little eggs, too.” Wiatrowski also explained what his favorite part of Easter is and what makes it special to him. “Definitely the golden eggs. They’re my favorite part. To me, Easter is special because our family always finds something to do to celebrate, no matter what. It’s special because our mom does something special for us. She’s always there for us.”
Nate Regan shares how he celebrates Easter. “My little brother wakes us up because he’s excited about the Easter Bunny, and then there’s a bunch of laid eggs all over… inside those eggs there’s a bunch of chocolate and candies, my favorites are the Reese’s Pieces eggs.” Regan also specified how he still gets an Easter basket, “A green one with a Bunny, and it’s better than my brother’s cause it’s bigger.” He just really loves Easter, and says he’s in it for the chocolate.
Aditi Shiggavi celebrates Easter by doing several events. While she does not receive an Easter basket, she talked about how she does an “Easter egg hunt, which has chocolate in it, and that’s pretty much it.” She also explained who she meets up with on Easter. “Our family friends who live in the same neighborhood and my parents, that’s who I celebrate with.” To Shiggavi, Easter is about spending extra time with family and friends.
From CHS, we hope you enjoyed your Easter Sunday!
