Chesterton High School is offering a fantastic new opportunity for students to enter the work force without having to do so much as leave campus. The custodial faculty is seeking two students to join the force of helping maintain the cleanliness and organization that CHS is known for. This job is an excellent way for teenagers to gain work experience in the comfort of a familiar place.
Student custodians will be tasked with all the standard duties of the job, as well as reap the benefits that being a janitor provides. The projected salary is currently $16/hr, exceeding twice Indiana’s minimum wage and paying the money-hungry youth more than many fast food restaurants and retailers. With a maximum of 20 hours per week permitted by the state, a student custodian can earn up to $320 working five days a week after school. The position expects workers to complete tasks like cleaning up after the student body, gym floor maintenance, locker repair, shampooing carpets, assisting with snow removal, and whatever else will help maintain the safety, security, and structure of our school. In the footsteps of CHS’s current custodians, student employees will be expected to perform their duties properly, diligently, and respectfully, as is the standard for any other privilege.
This opportunity is made possible by head custodian Jerry Guess, who will also be conducting interviews of applicants for the student custodian positions. Guess, a responsible and professional worker himself, is looking for like-minded individuals to employ. Student applicants must be preemptively prepared for the job in terms of interpersonal skills, proficiency, trustworthiness, reliability, and zest for learning in order to acquire this position, which is intended to emphasize all of these qualities, as well as reward them.
“Being a student custodian helps students grow by teaching responsibility, accountability, and pride in their environment. It gives them hands-on experience working as part of a team, managing their time, and understanding the importance of hard work,” explains Guess.
“They learn to take ownership of their school, develop strong work habits, and gain practical skills that will benefit them in any future job or career.”
Although it is no secret that high school is not always a teenager’s favorite place to be, attending one as fortunate as CHS is deeply underappreciated, and becoming an employee here can only heighten the experience. Earning money, building a resume, gaining real-world work experience, and taking control over the well-being of the school can boost even the most unenthusiastic student’s morale. At this time, there are only two positions available, so act fast if this lengthy list of benefits caters to you.
Application for potential student custodians can be easily conducted on the Duneland School Corporation website under the “Employment Opportunities” tab, linked below. Once faced with the maroon “Applicants” heading, click on “Current Openings” and scroll down to “Student only Part Time Custodial Position(s).” Upon an influx of applications, Guess will administer interviews and select the two lucky recipients of this position. Employment of student custodians will follow immediately after the jobs are offered.
Fun fact: critically acclaimed author Stephen King drew inspiration for his breakthrough novel Carrie from his experience as an observant janitor at a high school, so who knows? Perhaps becoming a custodian at CHS could be your greatest muse, too. If you are in search of a muse or simply pursuing local employment that pays well, provides social and hands-on work, and does not require much transportation, then look no further than the student custodial opportunity provided by yours truly, Chesterton High School.
